I've known about this magazine, but had never picked it up before. The first one I bought was the July-August issue. It has a great article on John Sobieski and the relief of Vienna in1683, as well as an article on the SMS Goeben which they developed a game around.
I would consider subscribing to the magazine. The thing that puts me off a little is that I found all the articles to suffer from terrible editing.
So, my question for anyone who does subscribe to S&T or picks it up frequently is, is poor editing normal for this magazine? Or did I simply pick an issue that the staff was behind schedule (which seems unlikely since it's only June) or off kilter? Maybe I'll try and pick up the next issue and see if it's any different. I was just a little surprised at all the misprints for a $7.00 magazine.

Shoddy editing is par for the course. I get an occasional issue with the game if it is an interesting game, but the games often suffer from poor development. I would not recommend a subscription, instead get the issue if the game is of interest or if there are several interesting articles.

Vintage 70s issues are great, if you ever have opportunity to acquire them.

Back in the day the magazine and the games were wonderful. I subscribed for a couple of years in the early 80s. I've bought the occasional S&T here and there recently and thought they were interesting reads. I was not impressed by the games though. Pretty fiddly and complex really. More than they needed to be.

In addition to Strategy & Tactics, Decision also publishes World at War (with a game in each issue) and Modern War (with a game in issue). That's 18 bi-monthly issues and games per year, in addition to Decision's separate boxed and folio games. I think they have spread themselves too far, and with respect to the games, at least, it seems there's a tendency just to move product out the door, without ensuring said product is fully developed.

That has largely been my impression as well. I have plenty of the other games/magazines that were great and I want to support new ones. But, they quality has just not been there and many of the games are just not great. I like a bunch of the Against All Odds offerings and the GMT in house magazine is pretty good for their games.

Well, that's a shame to hear that it wasn't just an off issue. I kind of liked the sound bite of historical information that's presented with gaming in mind. I've never purchased any of DG's games, but I had been looking at their folio & mini series. I'll probably just hold off on that now. Poor editing and rushed design doesn't sit well with me. I see very little excuse for mispellings in a professional magazine in our modern age of "spell check".

I think the only reason to get S&T is because of an interest in a game, and then don't expect it to be fully developed or well edited. Joseph Miranda covers some interesting topics other than the usual WWII stuff.

Ikve bought the occasional iissue on and off over the years and would agree with others that picking up the odd issue looks to be the best choice.

The older ones from SPI are great, just use your google skills and you'll find many on the internet as pdfs.
