Hi, all.
I'm new here on odd74 but many of you know me from the DF forum. I joined (the other day) because I'm starting a whole new OD&D campaign that I hope to be my "main campaign." I'm coming from the "second/third wave" generation - the generation that caught wind of the game just before the moral panic years - somewhere around 1982/3. I started with Moldvay/Cook with a dash of Holmes and then played a hybrid DMG + Basic for a while before finding the rest of the hardcover books at the local WH Smith (before that it was hunting in musty hobby shops and small bookstores). Back in the day I also ran Top Secret, Star Frontiers and Marvel Super Heroes. In University (the 90's) I ran 2E and played a lot of Call of Cthulhu and experimented with Harn and Palladium books. Since the mid-naughts I reverted back to 1E and then became fascinated with the history of D&D and the "Little Brown Books" version of the game (and so did many other 2nd and 3rd gens, it seems). I've since collected most of OD&D and I've run a few one-shot games over the years (my bread and butter still being AD&D). My current AD&D campaign is about 3 years in and coming to an end soon (cough, cough, feeling a bit stale).
Cheers!

I started playing in 1991 with the big black box and then moved on to second edition. Played third edition and moved on to Pathfinder.
I got to be point where I grew tired of the 3rd edition style of the game. I looked into all the OSR games. I think I own almost all of them. I found a few that I liked but the call of OD&D was always in the background. So eventually I heeded the call and tried to grok it but wasn't really getting there. Then I found Philotomy's Musings and Wayne's OD&D setting. Which kindled a fire inside me to spend more time to understand the original rules.
The adventure so far has been a blast. I love this site. It has so many knowledgeable members that it helps a lot in learning about the original game.
I always had Delving Deeper as my clone of choice for OD&D but I feel the game is getting a bit too esoteric for my liking. But I found out the pdf for version 2 is still available for download so I've set myself a project that I think will help with fully understanding the system.
I'm going to take the version 2 delving deeper rules and make my own document and edit it to remove the chainmail stuff. I hope to make it similar to the single volume edition of OD&D.
Anyways. That's the plan. I love the journey of discovery for the original game and how this site is such a great tool to assist with the journey.

Welcome, wanderer! If you don't mind me asking, why do you prefer the 2nd version of the DD to the current version?

Thanks Strangebrew. Let me be clear upfront. I still appreciate and like what Simon is doing with Delving Deeper as a game that incorporates chainmail.
But I prefer it without the chainmail stuff so that it reads more like the LBBs to me. I don't like the normal types, normal missles, man types, etc. Terminology that it incorporates throughout the game. Also I don't like the male centric language cause I plan to play the game with my daughter.
Adding up all the chainmail rules and the style Simon is going for make the game too esoteric for me. As an example: I asked about specific words that were used in describing the ability scores and Simon came back with a detailed explanation of his thinking behind it. Which made sense but I like the game to be more accesible than that without the need to explain things to that extent.
With that being said some rules from the later version will be added to version 2, like jousting.

I've had a blast playing with my kids; how old's your daughter?

Thank you Kesher. She is way too young to play now. She is only 9 months old. But I'm so excited to game with her when she is older that I view all games now as if looking through her eyes.

Hello, it's Cesare from Italy. I play D&D since the red box edition, and usually I'm the DM as I'm the only stupid guy who reads all manuals

Hello All!
Mostly, I've just been a lurker, but why not come out of the shadows!
I'm a writer (oh gawd another one of those) and an RPG enthusiast. I've written articles for Palladium Books Rifter and articles as well as RPG (Indy Game Scene)reviews for Knights of the Dinner Table. This is a tuff industry to find paid work... Right now I'm stuck on Retro-clones and I playing two PBP games one for Labyrinth Lord the other Sword & Sorcery. My first RPG ever was a boxed set for D&D in the 90's I can't recall the title, but you started in the dungeon and had fight your way out... After that it was on to Advanced Dungeons and Dragons (2nd edition?) for a number of years.
I've almost started a HackMaster Campaign in the last year or so but being living in nowhere middle America it's been tough to get this game off the ground.
I've also started a blog and I'm working on a couple of adventure and map projects for fantasy (OSR) games, but since this is my introduction (no shameless self promotion, yet)I'll be plugging those later.
Take care,
Jeff

Just posted this over at Ruins of Murkhill, but I hope no one will mind an introduction cross post:
Salutations. I am new to this board and am mostly a lurker, but have a (very) few Dragonsfoot posts from over 10 years ago. At one point I had a section of Gary's Yggsburgh to detail for that project but had to drop out due to serious family illness. Most of my actual playing and DMing were with AD&D 2e in the '90s, but my favorite systems are OD&D/Classic D&D and clones thereof, especially the ones that either follow the source material closely (e.g. Delving Deeper, Blueholme) or, at the other end of the spectrum, those that take the source material and reimagine it in some kind of radical, clever way (Whitehack, Seven Voyages of Zylarthen). The newer versions of the game are not to my taste (dabbled in 3.0 when it came out, missed 3.5 and 4 entirely) but I will probably start playing a 5e game with my brother-in-law and his friends on Roll20.

Welcome! One thing I'd like to ask from all the new arrivals, though_ Here, or elsewhere on the boards, please tell us a few more details about your actual games, if you currently run or play in any: It is understood that everyone who posts here is, to some degree, interested in oldschool-style play. But how exactly do you implement those principles into your games? - That's what I'd like to know. For example, amjeerih, do you still use Yggsburgh in your games? Do you run it under C&C rules, or did you perhaps switch to one of the other systems you named?

For example, amjeerih , do you still use Yggsburgh in your games? Do you run it under C&C rules, or did you perhaps switch to one of the other systems you named? I have mostly been away from the hobby since that time and am just getting back into it, though I did start an campaign in the Yggsburgh setting using C&C rules at the time that quickly fizzled out, and was working on my own OD&D-like ”clone” about 10 years ago that I was hoping to run a game with. I have been slowly catching up over the past year or so about what has happened since then, but I haven't gotten a game together yet. I tended to use Greyhawk when I was a DM in 2e, and as a player it was mostly Al-Qadim and Dark Sun. At If I start DMing again, I Intend to use a ”bottom up” sandbox approach and let the overarching setting grow organically, using OD&D or a clone.

Hello all, here is my introducing myself.
I began with 3.5e, which was the most recent edition at the time. I quickly became disillusioned with a weird sort of contradiction between what I considered to be the intent of the rules and what it seemed like the rules were doing, and leapt backwards to AD&D 1e, and finally crept down into OD&D. I have come to appreciate enjoyment and looseness, in fact sometimes I worry that I prize them over all else.
I have made looks into other games like Classic Traveller, Bunnies and Burrows, Gamma World, Microscope, DCC, &c.
One things that I haven't (yet) been able to look too much into is the wild world of wargames, but perhaps that will change soon.
It feels a privilege to be a part of this forum!

I made my return to table top gaming with 3.5 and also became fatigued by the rules. I went back to 2nd edition and have settled with OD&D (via a clone). I never played OD&D back in the day, bt like you, I have come to really appreciate it.

Hey there!
New to the boards, and to OD&D and general, so a huge amount of thanks to Finarvyn who dropped the shields so I could join.
I'm from Dallas, Texas, and I'm the primary DM in my group (though I've got a buddy who takes the duties off me once every blue moon). I got my start in pen and paper RPGs in high school with 3E, which my cousin DMed. We TPKed regularly, and argued minor details often (our most heated debate was whether there could be such a thing as a "good" assassin, based on the requirements of the class. We stayed up until 6am. Those were the days).
In college, I played a lot of the indie stuff (Mountain Witch, Dogs in the Vineyard) and also had my first experience with Cyberpunk 2020. Then took a long break.
When I came to, a friend of mine goaded me into playing DCC, which led me to LOTFP, which led me to Carcosa, which led me to OD&D. And that's the story of how I got here more or less.
My current group plays 5e when I'm not DMing, and when I'm DMing it's usually recently been DCC or LOFTP, though I'm thinking of making the jump to OD&D with my next adventure. I just got the PDFs a few weeks ago and made some booklets of my own. I'm drawn to OD&D because of its incompleteness, or its need for interpretation. I feel like that leads to a deeper connection with the game when you have to scribble in the margins to make the game complete, or your own.
I'm thinking of going to North Texas RPG Con this summer (since it won't be during Origins), so that I can apprentice under some more learned DMs (and maybe even try Empire of the Petal Throne, which is my new obsession).
Glad to be here. Hope to learn a lot!
