Chainmail says, “When casualties from any and all causes exceed a certain percentage of a units original total strength, morale for that unit must be checked by rolling two dice.”
It goes on to say when this should be performed.
1. After missile fire portion of the turn, but before melee.
2. After melees are completed for the turn.
Number two suggests, but does not explicitly say in the rules, that this would occur after the Post Melee Morale check.
It’s the following segment that has me questioning how others use the rule and whether I’m misunderstanding its application. It says, “If the unit remains stable, it need not again check morale until such a time as it suffers losses to the stated percentage of its original strength.”
Part of the problem lies in the fact that Chainmail does not define what a “unit” is. Basically, it can be any size force of the same troop type in a formation. It’s really up to the player.
So, if a unit of 10 HF figures suffers 4 casualties, it must make a check of 7+ to remain stable, since it incurred casualties of 33 1/3%.
My reading of the rule tells me that this unit would only need to suffer one more casualty at any point in the game forward and it would be removed from play. But the language of the passage has me wondering if I’m missing something. Why does the sentence not simply say, “when unit suffers any more casualties, it should be removed from play at the end of the turn”? Is the passage suggesting that the unit might be reinforced or combined with another unit? Or is the passage saying the above HF unit could suffer 4 more casualties before being removed (the original number that represents 33 1/3%)? Or is it suggesting that the unit could suffer 33 1/3% more casualties (2 figures)? How do you guys interpret this?
