Picture of J. Eric Holmes for FO! #15

I found a good one on James Smith's blog:

Others out there? In the past we have almost always gotten permission from the photographer to use a picture.

We do want to find a good one for the dedication page for #15.

The photo on that blog is from Holmes' 1981 book. It's on page 5 and shows Holmes running a game on his chalk board gaming table in the basement of his house in LA. Some of the photos in the book are credited, but not this one. I believe it would fall under the general copyright for the book. I can't think of any public domain photos of Holmes.

Who owns the copyright for the book?

There are not too many photos floating around. There's the one with his ERBZine award, the blurry one of him with his son Chris, and one other I remember seeing but can't locate on line right now.

I remember right after he passed there were some people in touch with his family? Maybe they would have a photo they were willing to share, if they knew we were going to dedicate an issue of a long-running fanzine to him.

Hippocrene Books was the publisher for Fantasy Role Playing Games. They are still around and information about obtaining permissions to use their published material can be found here: www.hippocrenebooks.com/contact.aspx

I'd be curious to know how contacting them turns out. I've been preparing to do the same with one of my projects.

EDIT: Information needed for a permission request: The full title of the book is Fantasy Role Playing Games, published in 1981. The ISBN no. is 0-88254-514-0. The photo of Holmes playing on his chalkboard paint gaming table is on page 5.
