Has anyone used the monster alignment charts in chainmail as the potential classes a player can choose from?
A lawful party might have heroes, dwarfs, and wizards A neutral party might have lycanthropes, elves, and sprites A chaotic party might have a vampire, a true troll, and some hobgoblins
You could even give a party 100 points to pick their characters and henchmen with.
A lawful party could have a Magician, a Hero, and 5 dwarfs, while a chaotic party could have a true troll, a wraith, and two hobgoblins
It would also make it easier to incorporate extra classes, as you could assign a ranger a higher point value than a fighting man. It also makes "merchant" or "thief" a viable choice, as you add a lot of resources to the party, while not taking up a lot of points.
I'm thinking about this with the mindset of having multiple adventuring parties of different alignments, working against each other.

Your party has to pick an alignment.
Then, they figure out what class everyone is, and how many points they have left to spend on henchmen, after they choose their classes. This is where max number of henchmen and max number hirelings matter.
Lawful Classes Point Value Man (LF) 1 Heavy Foot 2 Hobbit (1.5?) Dwarf 2 Hero 20 Ranger 25 Magician 70
Neutral Classes Berserker (HF) 2 Sprite 4 Elf 4 Lycanthrope 20 (Druid) (50)
Chaotic Classes Goblin 1.5 Hobgoblin 2.5 Wraith 10 Anti-Hero 20 True Troll 75 Balrog 75 (Assassin) (20) (Vampire) (100)
