Could anyone tell me or point me to the differences between The Best of the Dragon volumes I & II - original and revised editions? www.acaeum.com/ddindexes/periodicals/dragon.htmlThe Acaeum lists: Best of the Dragon vol 1. Best of the Dragon vol 1, revised. Best of the Dragon vol 2. Best of the Dragon vol 2, revised. I'd like to know which would be preferable from an OD&D perspective before hunting for them, but my Google-fu is weak today as I couldn't find anything covering the differences (if any). Thanks

From what I can tell the only differences between the volume 1's is that artwork and advertisements are different in the revised one and that in the revised copy they dropped one of the stories (IIRC they dropped An Interview with a Rust Monster).
As to the revised copy of vol2 I have no idea as I wasn't aware that they revised vol 2.

Thanks Stonegiant. If it's principally the advertising that changed, I'll just pick up which ever I can find.
Cheers

Vol. I revised took out the ads and added a bunch of extra artwork (which is a trifle jarring because the vintage of the new artwork (c. 1986) doesn't match the articles (c. 1975-78)), cut the "Search for the Forbidden Chamber" story (Interview with a Rust Monster is still there), and printed the whole thing on thinner, glossier paper-stock. I believe they also cut the original intro by Tim Kask and replaced it with a new one by Kim Mohan (or perhaps Roger Moore -- whoever was the current editor at the time). The original vol. I (published in 1980, IIRC) is more of an artifact (the ads themselves carry some nostalgia value) but if your interest is primarily in the content itself, either version should do (the Forbidden Chamber story is slightly funny (and is one of several articles featuring pot-smoking references that wouldn't have made it past the censors in the "angry mothers" era) and has some fun art by David Sutherland, but isn't a major loss by any means).
I don't think vol. II had ads in it originally so I'm guessing the only changes in vol. II revised are the paper-stock, cover-price, and addition of a bar-code to the cover.

One of my friends purchased the first volume of Best of The Dragon when it was first released. It is very, very cool.
Years later I ordered a copy, and it was the revised edition I got. Taking out all those old ads sucked a lot of the life out of it. I then hunted down an unrevised printing.

I'm another one of those who were unaware that a revised edition had been created. I've never seen the ad-free one, but it does sound a bit strange.
The earlier BotD volumes were the best, by the way. I and II were pretty good, III-V not so good. Of course, the editions reflected the contents of Dragon, which I believe got worse as time passed.
