Is there a certain print of this that's most desirable for playability reasons - includes errata, etc? Or are they all basically the same?

They are all pretty much the same. Earlier prints lack some spells and such, so it's actually better to get later editions.
Basically, any Chainmail you can get is fine.

I have a 3rd edition 2nd print (with the stapled binding). It's one of my most prized gaming possessions

I had to sell my 2nd ed, my actual LGTSA gaming copy, a few years back to survive. It bloody well broke my heart.
I'd love to find any edition that still includes the Balrog.
