I understand the idea of "do it your way", but I'd still like to hear how others handle thief abilities.
1. Stealth during combat:
Would it be appropriate to allow a thief to use "hide in shadows", or "move with great stealth" during combat? Would anyone be willing to share how they allow the use of thief abilities in combat if at all?
My intent is for this to only be usable in particular circumstances. For instance, if a thief were solo and against an opponent I would likely rule against being able to use either ability in a melee. I don't want a thief turning invisible before one's eyes. However, if part of a larger group and not already engaged in hiding or stealth, I think it might be possible to use the chaos of battle to attempt to move unnoticed to gain the opportunity to strike silently (unnoticed) from behind.
The desire to allow for such ability use during combat is stemming from the consideration of allowing thieves dodge bonuses to AC or other abilities that make them attractive in combat. This would not make them ideal for one on one encounters unless they were able to plan and choose the fight, which I like. But it still presents the opportunity to use thief themed abilities in combat.
2. Reading scrolls:
What about allowing a 10% cumulative chance to read them from 1st level? Too munchkiny or workable? I liked the idea of reading the scrolls being similar to the other abilities that started as a low percentage and increased in level.

Stealth during combat: I normally rule similarly to your line of thinking when I referee.
Reading scrolls: why not? Not a bad little variant at all.
