As I was re-reading the Save section of the player manual, I found myself puzzled by the Device save. Does anyone have an exemple as to when to roll it ? On a totally different matter, after reading the Arms of Hyperborea thread and seeing a couple of videos about ancient fighting, I'm pondering extending the Weapon Mastery ability to the shield. So far, I guess it would grant the usual +1 to hit and +1hp damage, plus a +1 bonus to the shield bind action. At Grand Mastery level, those bonuses would be doubled and, as I feel generous , the character would also receive a +1 AC bonus from his shield. Any thoughts about that ?

As I was re-reading the Save section of the player manual, I found myself puzzled by the Device save. Does anyone have an exemple as to when to roll it ? It applies to saving throws related to magic items. For example, if someone uses a staff or wand against your character, even if it is a spell fired from the item, it is still a device save. I think it's a good idea, but strictly from a defensive standpoint (and perhaps the bind advanced action, too); not as an offensive weapon. But do as you wish, it's your campaign!

Thank you for the clarification. I was thinking that the type of saving roll depended on the kind of effect and not its source. Well, my goal was to promote the shield mechanically to encourage the PCs from cultures where armour is uncommun or frowned at to stay away from armours and stick to their shield. I've just start thinking about all that. Maybe I could make it so that the shield master doesn't lose its AC bonus while binding shield or that he could bind its shield to the opponent's weapon, i.e.preventing the victim to use that said weapon as long as he doesn't succeed to Strenght or Dexterity test to unbind himself. Or maybe just put a condition stating that a shield provides AC bonus as long as the character can move normally, i.e unarmoured or lightly armoured. Anyway, that's all just brainstorming.

Thank you for the clarification. I was thinking that the type of saving roll depended on the kind of effect and not its source. It's because the precise nature of the magical effect varies depending on the source. A wand of fear (for example) actually emits a visible ray that can be dodged, while a fear spell affects a whole area and must be resisted with inner strength or whatever. So a class that's good at dodging, like a thief, has a better chance to save against a wand of fear, while a class that is innately resistant to magic, like a magician, has a better chance to save against a fear spell.

Everything's clear now, thank you.
Edit : I've been looking for Clark Ashton Smith novels but it seems quite hard to come by on this side of the Atlantic and I guess I'll have to go for ebooks. Not being a specialist of his work, I'm a bit lost with all those anthologies though. Could anyone tell me which books would be best to have a taste of his Hyperborea and Zothique works ?
