Don't let the critics fool you, for a fun movie you could do worse . Also if playing Boot Hill or another western system is also serves to get the juices flowing. Hell he's even stated out in Dragon, (working on what his stats would be in my game). Lastly westerns on the big screen are few and far between these days... Take what you can get

While this certainly wasn't the worst movie ever put up on screen, it was a poor adaption of a classic character. Rather like the Spirit film from a few years back, it gets the faces right but the feel all wrong. It was a decent way to pass a couple of hours, but anybody who truly enjoys the Lone Ranger will be disappointed.
The last truly GREAT Western that I can recall was Unforgiven in 1992, though there have been a few enjoyable ones over the past few years, such as Cowboys and Aliens, Django Unchained, and the True Grit remake.

I was nervous about this for a couple of reasons: (1) Johnny Depp just doesn't seem like Tonto. (2) The previews all looked really CGI. (Silver running on top of a train? Seriously?) (3) I love the traditional Lone Ranger theme song (William Tell Overature) and none of the previews had it, although I've been assured from folks at DF that it's in there. westerns on the big screen are few and far between these days... Take what you can get A good point. I'll probably go to see it.

Yep safer to discuss here Fin- I wouldn't worry about the CGI; there was only a few points where I said "Hey that's CGI". As far as Depp as Tonto, I expected Captain Jack Sparrow as Tonto, sure there are echoes, but I liked the character. For me I don't have/much/any preconceived notions of what the Lone Ranger SHOULD be. As I noted at DF, I wasn't even born when it was in TV. I've seen done reruns but not a ton. All in all there are/were some implausible points to it, but its a movie. I got to see movies to be entertained and I was. So if the armchair critics and the "professional" ones don't like it what do I care? You know what they say about opinions In short I spent $5.50 to see it. I was entertained by it. If some people, critics, whoever think I shouldn't have enjoyed it they can pound sand. Doc- you're forgetting Open Range which was a d**n good movie. The remake of 3:10 to Yuma and Appaloosa were good as well. But yes of the last two decades Unforgiven is the best.

I liked the 3:10 to Yuma remake...and if you aren't too much of a "purist", The Warriors Way is great fun...it's a western, really (well, mostly)! www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Z8xYMomsDc

OK, just saw the movie. I enjoyed it (about 30 minutes too long IMHO) but yeah, didn't feel like the Lone Ranger at all. Honestly, if I saw it and it wasn't called "The Lone Ranger" I would have just thought it was a western with some LR spoofs.

Tombstone will always be my favorite western Yeah, Tombstone is near the top of my list as well! Silverado is pretty good, as is the original Magnificent Seven. I was at Barnes & Noble the other day and picked up season #1 of Maverick (the old James Garner series) on the 50% rack, so I paid only $20 for it. We ought to have a "Boot Hill Appendix N" thread.

I enjoyed the Lone Ranger. Sure it's not exactly like the tv or radio shows, but it's not too far off either, IMHO(I'm no LR expert, but I did wasch the shows a lot as a kid after school, and had quite a few of the radio shows on cassette, remember those?) I think the trick to enjoying the movie is to see it as a story told by an 80 year old Tonto to a kid who he is getting snacks from. I loved that framing sequence

We would have to do sub appendices for movies and novels, since both categories have such dramatically different feels to them. Oddly, I generally enjoy older western books better than the newer ones, but I prefer the newer movies to the older ones. (with the definitions of "older" and "newer" being kind of fuzzy)

I loved that framing sequence I agree I think the framing was a great way to tell the story. Now obviously it's an attempt to appeal to baby boomers in their youth... For my part I'm just not getting why the critics hated it before it even was released. As I noted over at DF it's probably going to fall I to the category of Green Lantern. It makes its profit back but not enough for it to be a success.

Great movie. Enjoyed it all. Even when the Lone Ranger theme started to play during the final action sequence(felt corny but I was smiling).
