Maybe I'm just unlucky, but I still have not yet received my copy of Fight On!, even though Lulu.com sent me an email saying it'd been shipped over two weeks ago. In that time, I have ordered and received products from the US and Finland. I realize that Canada is considered the equivalent of Outer Mongolia as far as shipping things from the US goes, but I'm disappointed nonetheless. If Iggy hadn't sent me a PDF copy for being a contributor, I wouldn't have been able to read the thing at all.
Bah.
Let's try to find an alternate delivery system for the 'zine next time around. Please.

Apparently we're short on pluralization of nouns down here in the lower 48, though.

Sorry, James. That sucks. If people in Australia and Argentina have already gotten it it seems like you should have...ah well. Mine took about a week, which seems a little long, but you have to wait for the POD as well as the post.
I looked into Amazon's Creative Commons as an alternative distro method but they don't have the 8.5 x 11 size, somewhat unbelievably.
If people know of other POD outfits that will take a standard PDF and make a magazine-type thingie out of it I will be happy to list Fight On! at those as well.

Lulu can have some weird hiccups sometimes. They once swallowed an entire order of mine.

Lulu can have some weird hiccups sometimes. They once swallowed an entire order of mine. What did you have to do in order to get the order? I'm willing to give Lulu until next week, but, beyond that, there's really no excuse for the delay.

To tell the truth, I completely forgot about it until almost half a year later; by then, it may have been useless to write them.

I just received my copy today. No idea why it took so long, since there's no indication that the box -- talk about overkill -- was damaged or otherwise lost. Customs didn't open it either, which is sometimes an explanation for a delay. In any case, it's nice to have a hardcopy in my hands -- even if I do wish it were smaller in size.

Does Lulu have the option for something sized as the OD&D booklets? That would be wonderful!

They have 6x9, but they don't have 5.5 x 8.5, which is the digest size. Amazon's Creative Commons does though. But I'm not crazy about switching to the smaller format now, to be honest. Though I suppose we could just publish miniature shrunk-down versions in that size...talk about eyestrain on the text!

I know. If I had known about the Amazon option at the beginning of this project, I might well have gone with them (if the pricing was reasonable), because I really desperately wanted digest size. And you're right, the old books have really small type, especially Arduin. But, it's much easier on your small, highly-paid editorial staff to be able to construct pages the way they look. That, plus the fact that we already started with the other, makes me want to stick with what we've got. Still, never say never. I've got my hands full working on the mag as it is, but I'll keep my eyes open for new options.

For the record, I'm totally fine with the 8.5 x 11 size.

And, as ever, I'm sure there are plenty among us who'd gladly volunteer to assist with future issues in any way we can. Mind you, I have no complaints at all about how you've done thus far, but I'm also acutely aware of how much time and effort it takes to publish even something as relatively modest as a 32-page fanzine. If there is ever anything I can do to alleviate the burden even a little, don't hesitate to ask. I'm sure others feel the same way.

Thanks James. I've had some great offers for editorial and other help from a few other people as well.
The reason I haven't taken people up on it so far is just time, mostly. Sending big files back and forth, debating possibilities, etc. slows things down. Also, to be honest I have a lot of fun just thinking about how to fit as many cool articles together as I can in an interesting way by myself. But, you (and coffee and kesher and a few others) are on a short list of people I will contact if I feel like it's needed.

I'm also ok with the current size. It felt like receiving the Holmes Basic for the first time! That was my first sensation.
The current size might allow for bigger maps maybe. That's not a minor issue. It's harder to fit maps in the small sized booklets.
The OD&D size would be really cool, but more esthetic than useful.
Any of the 2 are just ok.

Digest sized would be cool. But layout would probably be a PITA, especially maps.

I hesitate to say anything not positive about anything so awesome as the first issue of Fight On!, but honestly when I received my copy the first thing I thought was "I wish this was digest size."

Well, I just got the email saying that my copy of Fight On! has shipped - we'll see how long it takes to get here. Just arrived today - 7 days from when it shipped. Not too bad. The magazine looks good so far. I third (fifth?) the motion that octavo size would be most old school - like Arduin, Booty and the Beasts, et. al...
