More than two years in the making, the long-awaited Petty Gods project started by James Maliszewski can finally be downloaded: gorgonmilk.blogspot.com/2013/04/original-petty-gods-free-pdf.htmlNot an April Fool's joke, I swear. It really is available at last. Lots of really nice gods here. Not all of them are appropriate for AS&SH as written, but many are usable with little or no modification. They could be quite useful as the minor spirits and gods worshipped by certain shamans and druids and the like. Check it out! (Full disclosure: I have a god in the book. ;D )

I wasn't enthused with the idea for this project when I first read about it, but at seeing the results I must say I was wrong to have ever doubted its usefulness.

Any early opinions on which "petty gods" seem suitable for S&S themed gaming?

Arolohnso!
He sounds so much like a cursed mage of great power than a god, but he'd certainly be a nasty presence within the narrow confines of his realm—the catacombs, sewers, and tunnels of whatever d**ned city has him.

I wasn't enthused with the idea for this project when I first read about it, but at seeing the results I must say I was wrong to have ever doubted its usefulness. Not every god would be useful in every campaign, but there's something for everybody here - high fantasy gods, sword and sorcery gods, and even humorous gods. That's the great thing about the OSR in general: people can take what they like and just ignore the rest. Any early opinions on which "petty gods" seem suitable for S&S themed gaming? Here are some that strike me as having an S&S flavor on a quick first read: Abondiance, Adassec, Arolohnso, Aspix the Forsaken, Atra, Azwa, Chulg, Diplodias, Gnunnung, Harbordorim, Lacta Lacrima, Lord Downall, Naaragiga, Nanefesterad, Nebius, Nocton Zython, Pakaan, Qualdoni, Satrum, Tau, Undek, and Zzyzz. Of course tastes will vary, and I included a couple of humorous or surreal gods because they struck me as particularly Smithian. In point of fact the majority of these gods could be made to work in an S&S setting, perhaps with some modifications.

The humorous aspect of Smith's writing is often overlooked, I think, but for me it is an integral part of the charm. Thanks for the list, ba23.

My favorite so far is Aglaos, god of torches. Respect the torchbearer!

I'm eagerly awaited the next volume, the expanded mammoth tome of Petty Gods. Contributed two entities to it myself (but they're not really ASSH-appropriate; one is the Lawful deity of cubes, quadrilaterals, etc. the other a divinely-made god-golem of fluctuating alignment, intellect, and outlook).
