I'm thinking about starting a Carcosa campaign. While the main thrust is going to be hexcrawling, the players are going to want a dungeon "just because". I got an idea for one based around an underground Snake-Man city, but I need ideas for interesting sights. Right now I've got too many rooms labeled "incomprehensible alien machinery, some of which is still active".
Any fool of a DM can kill his players, it's as easy as "Rocks fall, everybody dies". The Art lies in giving them the opportunity to kill themselves, in as entertaining a manner as possible.
Maybe some intricate devices that replicate ritual effects? A peek at the technology/sorcery used to create the races of man? Hybrid items in which Snake-Men have applied their knowledge to devices created by forerunner races?
I also view the Snake-Men as low-tech. They were masters of sorcery, but their technology was pre-gunpowder. Anything cool you can think of in a wizard's den or lab would be a great fit for the Snake-Men.
