...by Afred Bester is an astounding book. It's worth reading for the opening scene alone. The first sentence:
"He was one hundred and seventy days dying and not yet dead."
A stated influence on James Maliszewski's Thousand Suns, and a quite probable influence on Traveller as well.
I'm in the middle of it and I'm having a hard time putting it down...

It's one I've wanted to read for a long time. I had a similar experience when I read his Demolished Man novel about 18 years ago.

Definitely an influence on Traveller. I got a copy this weekend and am thoroughly enjoying it (was up way too late last night reading it...)

I know! It was hard to put down...
I'm gonna load up The Demolished Man as soon as I finish a couple other Traveller Appendix N titles...

Gully Foyle is my name, Terra is my nation. Deep space is my dwelling place, and the stars my destination! Ah, yes, I remember it well!

All time favorite scifi novel. I have a friend who wanted something to read but hates fantasy & scifi, I said you should read THE STARS MY DESTINATION. It is scifi but you are going to love it. He did and he now says it is the only scifi book everyone has to read. (Since it is re-telling of A TALE OF TWO CITIES it makes sense that he loved it.)
And I am pissed that Carpenter never raised the money to make the adaptation.

Sorry to admit that this is one I've never read, but based on this thread I think I'll have to track it down. Sounds awesome!

I just started reading this book, after seeing some positive reviews. A little shy of halfway through, and it has been pretty good so far.

Tiger! Tiger! burning bright In the forests of the night, What immortal hand or eye Could frame thy fearful symmetry? Blake
Very good book, it's in my regular rotation which I read every few years. It was probably a little ahead of it's time in 1956, but awesome today.
