My latest boardgame is The aMAZEing Labyrinth. I had never heard of it before but recently found a 1987 version by Ravensberger at a library book sale. And it's still in print with an average of 4.8 of 5 stars at Amazon (120+ reviewers). It's a board + tile game with simple, highly intuitive rules, and is highly replayable, great for kids and adults to play together. The board has a grid of geomorphic dungeon tiles fastened to it, and the rest of the board is filled in randomly at the beginning with the rest of the tiles, save one. At the start each player receives five "goal" cards which depict treasures or monsters that are shown in various tiles, but can only look at the first one. Each turn, a player must push the extra tile into one of the movable columns on the board, shifting all of the tiles of the column, in an attempt to connect the dungeon corridors between their current location and the goal they are currently seeking. They can then move to that goal and move on to their next goal. First one to finish and return to start is the winner. Players can also try to guess their opponents goals and try to push the tiles to thwart them. As you point out, Labyrinth is a fun game for the family. There is also a smaller card version of this game that plays a little differently, but is highly portable for road trips. Worth looking for if you enjoy the game. On the Wargame front, I've been revisiting Valor & Victory. This was a free print and play game with a decent following. Then the free game and scenarios were pulled from BGG when it's designer was going to professionally publish the rule set, but recent news is that they're back up. It's a WWII squad level game that you can play solo, but generally is set up for two players. Here's the link on BGG: www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/28452/valor-victory

(there may have been more over the years) Heck, if you are looking for more kids games I can definitely create a decent hit list This is a great thread, I love boardgames but have lost the desire to post much on BGG. I like hearing like-minded OSR gamer opinions P.S. my handle is "skars" on BGG as well if you have a question about a particular game in my collection.

I have an account on BGG also (Scalydemon) and use the site often for reference, but don't go to the forums or post there. I don't really understand the forum processes there including how the badge thingy works etc. - besides I have enough board forums that I do visit to suit me. Overall BGG is a great website though

I'm "derv" over on BGG as well. I've never posted a thing on the site, but I like reading some of the lists and particularly like looking at the print-and-play offerings.
If you decide to make a kid's games hit list, make sure to put Castle Panic on it. My kid's love that one.

Does Battletech count as aboard game? If not, well, I used to like AH's Panzer Blitz/Panzer Leader/Arab-Israeli Wars trilogy/system of games, but these days I like Panzer Grenadier better.

Hadn't gotten a chance to do any wargaming in quite awhile... Fixed that this afternoon, played Attack Sub from Avalon Hill for 2 hours with a friend. Fun little game. Had some adrenaline going. Sought out a copy as it was written by the same guy that wrote 'Up Front' and shares some similarities in it's mechanics. Mainly a card game. www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/1413/attack-sub

I just finished the first two scenarios from Desert Heat, a title in the "Nations of War" platoon-level World War II series from Lock n'Load Games. Italians vs. British in early 1941, and the Italians won both engagements!

My Lady and I have been playing the heck out of BIOS: Megafauna lately. She suspects there may be an advantage for choosing the route of a predator but I am thinking that riding the chaos and being agile choosing to expand where there is room for growth is really the key. We will see after another half a dozen games or so

My latest has been Deluxe OGRE. Finally got that beast, busted it out and got trashed by a MkIII. Oh well it was still fun and lots more to do with the game. Lots of possibilities.

Kingmaker is one of my all-time favorite AH games.I also like SPI's War of the Ring and AH's Dune a lot. Zombies!!! is also a lot of fun. Haven't played many wargames for a long time, however. Every time we get enough players together for a good boardgame, we figure we ought to role-play instead. I sold my copy of SPI War of the Ring before I ever got to play it, mainly for the same reason. I sold pretty much all my boardgames except Axis & Allies that routinely go beyond 4 hours.

Have you tried Devil's Cauldron? No sir, never heard of it. Get to do some gaming tomorrow though. Playing a 3 person card game called Trieste I bought awhile back and have been itching to give a go. - the art is not my style but I like the concept of a 3 person designed card game - Trieste, from designer Matthew Ma, is a boxed card game in which three players take on the roles of Thief, Merchant, or City Watch. Each role has its own unique deck and victory conditions. Turns are played out simultaneously, with each player selecting an action without knowing those chosen by opponents.
The City Watch player levies taxes on the Merchant and patrols the streets for the Thief, looking to fill the city's jail with ne'er-do-wells. Players in the role of the Merchant are out to cut deals and line their coffers in a quest for untold riches. As the Thief, that player is attempting to pilfer coins from the Merchant, while earning infamy and the respect of the secretive Foxtail Gang.
The coastal city of Trieste is a flurry of trade and activity, but where there's power, there are always those who will compete to grab as much of it as they can. Conflict erupts in the streets, shops, and back alleys. Only one can truly rule Trieste. Will it be you?

I'd forgotten how much a simple game can be such a blast.

I took an extended lunch hour today and played 'The Rivals for Catan' with a friend. boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/66056/the-rivals-for-catanIt is primarily a Catan cardgame. This was my first experience with a Catan game of any sort and my first experience playing a 'resource building' game. Didn't care for it much. I understand the strategy involved, but maybe it was the subject matter that left me flat. Oh well not a terrible way to spend an hour and a half

I’ve played that, or at least the old Catan Card Game. It’s okay, but not at all similar to The Settlers of Catan, IMO. The latter has a cool trading mechanic that makes it a great social game.

I just played Arkham Horror for the first time yesterday ans enoyed it quite a bit. I have traditionally had mixed feelings about FFG games, but this flowed very well and was extremely easy to grasp. After getting my backside handed to me by various monsters throughout the game, my private eye had a string of revenge-driven luck in the final three rounds and killed all the monsters on the board. Ha!

Fubar Medieval (2nd edition) with the LOTR expansion. Crazy. I have both Fubar and a sf variant set KR16 that a friend wants to play, but I'd never heard of Fubar Medieval before. Have to give that one a try. The one I'm looking to do is Fast Play Napoleonic Wargame Rules. Not overly detailed, but enough I think to get a feel for the period. Here's the link: met.open.ac.uk/group/jwl/napoleonic/nap_rules.htm

Played a game called Labyrinth: War on Terror this weekend. Played it twice before we realized we were playing it wrong. Pretty interesting game with some clever mechanics. Really is frustration for the US player.

Scott, what games would you suggest to try first? They are having a sale right now for the New Year , 2014_NEWS is the code , all upper case, 15% off until Jan 2nd, I am going to pick up a few things. Games I have from them that I really enjoy: 2 solitaire games in the 'States of Siege' - think thats what it is called - series, called Soviet Dawn and Ottoman Sunset. Did not realize a solitaire game that takes 45 mins to play could be this entertaining. These games use a common ruleset and are easy to learn. The Koenig Arnhem bridge 3 part series games are all excellent. Nice 2 hour low counter game with fun strategy and subject matter. Trieste is a fun 3 person medieval themed card game. I liked it alot. Bought a No Retreat game, the Rommell one but didn't care for the rules. On my list to try/buy: Napoleon 20 series, The Normandy beaches games by Paul Koenig, Omaha Beach, Canadaian Beaches, British Beach etc. - they get good reviews and I like this designer alot from the Arnhem bridge series. Also the red boxes they carry are very cool to put games in that originally come in ziplocks.

This is brilliant and the morale rules here are very nice.

Played Ancients today, we did a Saxons vs Vikings battle. Fun little game that includes a lot of different battles you can run. The version we played was mfg by 3W games in CA, I'm sure there are higher quality versions of the game published. Pic from today
