I played Zero! (Down in Flames) by GMT today. www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/2247/zeroIt is a card game that simulates WWII aerial action in the Pacific theatre. Fun game, quick if you are just doing one fighter plane vs another. We played 4 games in an hour and a half

Got in five games of Outdoor Survival last night. That first scenario is a wonderful exercise of Lovecraftian futility. The game generally gets a bad rap but I think it's good entertainment. More importantly it imported PanzerBlitz's "make your own scenarios" vibe. Good fun to be had with that.

Ragnarok is a good solo game. The Rainbow bridge rules are flawed, and the game is a bit long for two players. It would have been better with half the counters

Not a subject you see represented in wargames much. I read thru the rules briefly last eve. Hard to get a grasp on things such as how the bridge plays out etc without a play through. Also in the lot I bought was a copy of Wooden Ships & Iron Men, which means I now have 2 copies of that game if anyone happens to be seeking it for a fair price

I'm on a Civil War naval kick right now. I played four ship-to-ship battles from GMT's Oak and Iron game. And now I've switched over to their strategic game Rebel Raiders on the High Seas. Finished the first year of the war, with the Rebs clearly in the lead, but the Union production mills are rolling.

My latest boardgame is The aMAZEing Labyrinth. I had never heard of it before but recently found a 1987 version by Ravensberger at a library book sale. And it's still in print with an average of 4.8 of 5 stars at Amazon (120+ reviewers). It's a board + tile game with simple, highly intuitive rules, and is highly replayable, great for kids and adults to play together. The board has a grid of geomorphic dungeon tiles fastened to it, and the rest of the board is filled in randomly at the beginning with the rest of the tiles, save one. At the start each player receives five "goal" cards which depict treasures or monsters that are shown in various tiles, but can only look at the first one. Each turn, a player must push the extra tile into one of the movable columns on the board, shifting all of the tiles of the column, in an attempt to connect the dungeon corridors between their current location and the goal they are currently seeking. They can then move to that goal and move on to their next goal. First one to finish and return to start is the winner. Players can also try to guess their opponents goals and try to push the tiles to thwart them.

Just played a game of Tactics II by Charles S. Roberts. Brilliant stuff for 1958. Heck I still like it now.

Finally got a game of Panzer by GMT in. A bit confusing at first, but worth it.
Very jealous of scaleydemon. Machiavelli is one of my favorite multi player games of all time, even more fun than Diplomacy or Kingmaker for me.

Played about 4 hours of Up Front Sunday. We did an alternate scenario published in an old General zine called 501 City Fight. I was effective as the Germans getting my sub machine guns and assault rifles in close (to RR 5) . Tomorrow aft meeting a guy to play Year of the Rat: Vietnam 1972 www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/9961/year-of-the-rat-vietnam-1972 - Looking fwd to this..

Recently played Sandbox Hill, with the addition of giant robots. I'm eager to play it again, with the addition of some rules tweaks and actual 1/35 armor...
I've also been reading a PDF compilation of Charles Grant's BATTLE: Practical Wargaming. It's a good set of basic rules as well as an excellent tutorial on creating wargames in general.

Aide de Camp and VASSAL just aren't the same As a teenager, we used to have a lot of 4 or 5-player Swords & Sworcery games. We even set up War in the East and played a couple of months once

I really just need to sit down with the rules and get familiar. What was confusing for you at first? What was hanging us up was the spotting rules. While the mechanics are well spelled out the application on the table was a little less clear. Mainly why and when. Once we got a few turns ins it cleared up. Then started looking at applications during the game. Nothing that couldn't be overcome. As we discussed it after the game we realized there is a lot of depth and nuance to the mechanics. The Advanced game is even deeper. Over all we both enjoyed it quite a bit.

I've played Dip and Kingmaker but I'm not familiar with Machiavelli. What is it like? In the same vein as those two. Multi player fun with plenty of backstabbing opportunities. A bit more interesting timeframe historically also. A lot less vague than Dip. Plus its fun, as the Pope, to excommunicate people. Its been decades since I've seen the game let alone play. I just have more memories of fun times in high school of Machiavelli than Dip and Kingmaker. Just a gut reaction more than anything else.

IIRC Mechanically, Machiavelli is very similar to Diplomacy? Just acquired the Gibson Games version of Diplomacy. Have never gotten a chance to try this. Hard to believe there are no dice or cards. This wknd stayed at a Cabin near Astoria OR, played some backgammon and Soviet Dawn (The Russian Civil War 1918-1921) solitaire game. Most excellent if you want to play a designed for solitaire war game
