Issue #2 will be dedicated to Dave Arneson.
I am working on tracking down some articles on Dave and the way he runs games, because there is some very important stuff a lot of you know but which I'd like to get in print.
I am looking for a good B&W picture of Dave that we can use on the dedication page and also a quotation that sums up his approach to gaming and running games as well as possible. I sold my copy of FFC to Egg of Coot a while back so I don't have much to work with here, but it could really be from anything.
If you have a good picture email it to iggyumlaut@gmail.com; if you want to suggest quotations or other ideas, please reply to this thread! Thanks!

Wouldn't it be more appropriate to go with the recently passed Bob Bledsaw?

Issue #1 contains a note that says Issue #3 will be dedicated to Bob, which also makes sense for historical reasons. There are some other considerations as well which we can talk about over email if you're interested.

When I saw the title of this thread I feared that Dave Arneson had died, too. Thank goodness that's not the case.

My favorite Dave Arneson quote I heard somewhere (you'll have to track down the actual quote - I think someone has it as their sig either here or Dragon's foot) was something like, "if you don't entertain your DM, your DM will be forced to entertain himself, usually at your expense." Made me laugh and is soooo true.

There are some other considerations as well which we can talk about over email if you're interested. I think this is a good pattern. Gygax and Arneson deserve to be the dedications for issues 1 & 2 because of their contribution to the genesis of the game. It would be nice to generate a list of people for dedication in future issues -- individuals who have contributed to the success of OD&D at the start.

I definitely want to honor Dave Hargrave, Lee Gold, and M.A.R. Barker. Jim Ward, Steve Perrin, Greg Stafford, Ken St. Andre, Dennis Sustare, the Little Soldier guys, Pete & Judy Kerestan, and some others come to mind as possibilities too.
More immediately I could use help with the Arneson quotation and photo though.

You'll probably want to get around to Tim Kask, who took over editorial duties on The Strategic Review and then was the original editor of The Dragon. But probably after the people you mentioned above.
Also Rob Kuntz, co-author of Supplement I: Greyhawk.

Both good calls and names I've thought of before.

Will Niebling is another good choice for a later issue.

Dave Arneson quote
"if you don't entertain your DM, your DM will be forced to entertain himself, and how will they do that?"
"If I change a rule that makes it official."
"Don't ask me what you need to hit. Just roll the die and I will let you know."
"What! You got a mule full of monster stats?)
(Several variants on that one.)

I would say Bob Kuntz next. He did most of the GMing in Greyhawk. Then Barker (his world preceded D&D by a couple decades). Then Lee Gold for the first fanzine.

Lee Gold is a nifty honoree for an old-school paper fanzine coming from "APA v4" (a.k.a the Web)! Alarums & Excursions has a page here!

Dave Arneson, welcome, welcome welcome to the boards and thread! I found a nice quotation of yours on the 'castle blackmoor' site that I thought I might use, I can send it to you if you'd like to comment.
We have a couple articles about your GMing style from people who have played with you and if you'd like to comment on those, we'd love to hear what you have to say.
We'd also be interested in interviewing you for the magazine, if you think you have time. Phone or by computer.
Also, if you have any articles on Blackmoor, Adventures in Fantasy, anything you're working on now, you'd like to see in print with us, just send it along. Our authors retain ownership of everything they submit and all rights to it except the right for us to publish it in the form it's originally published in the issue it's originally published in in perpetuity. So anything you send us would still be yours. That would go for the interview too, we'd publish it, but it would be your interview to use or re-use as you like.
Anyway, great to see you here. My email is calithena@gmail.com if you'd like to discuss things more privately.
----------------------
As far as future dedications go, all the people mentioned here are good choices. Order I think will depend on the inspiration of the moment, though we're locked in for #3. Order of publication will not try to sort out 'who did what first' though, that's a hornet's nest and undoubtedly there are different honest answers to these sorts of questions.
Lee Gold is a central figure in the development of D&D and RPGing more generally and I think she deserves to be better known.

Geez, I'm probably too late, but in case I'm not, this is my Temple of the Frog picture that I think would go great in a book dedicated to Mr. Arneson. kevinmayle.netaidz.com/v/Fantasy/Frog+King.jpg.htmlIf you can use it, let me know and I'll e-mail you the high-res version. Thanks.

Thanks. Kevin, thanks for reminding me about that picture. It is beautiful! Calithena, if you haven't already, feel free to scavenge my website for stuff on Dave and Blackmoor. There are some pictures there, though most of them also appear elsewhere on the web, so there might not be much new in that regard. Havard

Kevin - do you have a black and white or greyscaled version of that? If so, I'll use it. It takes a while to assemble these issues, and the DA stuff is in the middle, so if you could get me that in the next week or so it would work. Thanks!
Havard, is all that stuff on your website yours?
Thanks to both of you!
Dave Arneson, if you're reading this thread, I'm going to send you some questions soon. If you have an email you check more regularly than these boards it would be useful if you could send it to me via PM, and we can talk by email or phone according to your convenience.

Havard, is all that stuff on your website yours? Articles, where no other credit is given is all written by me. The Gallery and Downloads sections are a bit more sloppy when it comes to credits. I will try to remedy that. The downloads are mainly links to WotC and other companies' sites with downloads so none of those are mine. Havard

Great!
Jeff Rients also did a nice job greyscaling your original for me, so one of the two will go in for sure.
Thanks!
