I just wanted to give applause to Robert S Conley and his Blackmarsh setting: rpg.drivethrustuff.com/product/89944/BlackmarshIve been using and abusing it, adding and taking away to really make it my own. It's been a real help in kickstarting my brain. It has that great Wilderlands feel while being much smaller in scope. I've used the Wilderlands before but for my upcoming game I wanted to start much smaller. I can never come up with a starting map and starting point that I'm ever satisfied with. I make a map then look a it later disatisfied then make another...etc.. This has given me just enough to really expand on my own and change it up (thank you for the rtf file) how I need to. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants a Wilderlands feel but with a much smaller setting who is having difficulty coming up with a place to start. ***disclaimer I am no way connected to the author just wanted to gush a little since I've not seen mention of this product on the boards.

I also really enjoyed Blackmarsh. I have not yet introduced it to my campaign but have placed it within the world for when we retire the players current characters and move away from the current location. I don't have Blackmarsh in front of me at the moment, is it OGL like his Wilderlands supplement? I would love to see your changes Also, if you're looking for a smaller starting off point, check out Robert's "Scourge of the Demon Wolf". It is in the Wilderlands as well but takes place in a Barony. Gives you a good idea on how to set up a smaller location. I also share your disclaimer. I'm not connected to Robert Conley but really enjoyed his work.

Yeah, Rob Conley's work is pretty good. Also, it is really easy to use in connection with supplements for the Blackmoor line.

Thanks for the compliments folks and it makes me glad to see everybody is getting some use out of it. If you got the PDF from RPGNow or bought the printed books, know that there is a Setting Reference Document in word doc format you can download from here. www.batintheattic.com/downloads/blackmarsh_srd.zipNote that the text, and the maps are Open Content under the Open Game License for commercial or non-commercial project. Or the Creative Common License (attribution, non-commercial). Which one you use is your choice. The second license is for fans of other RPGs that don't have an open license like GURPS. Obviously for those games I can't authorize commercial use of Blackmarsh.

Robert, I read through the Blackmarsh booklet the other night for the first time. Great stuff. I'll likely integrate it into some of our wilderness adventures and give the campaign a grander scale. Exalt to you!

I couldn't find a more appropriate thread to ask on, so I am hijacking this one a bit. I've been trying to figure out how Blackmarsh fits into the other settings Rob has put out there. As far as I can tell the picture "around" Blackmarsh is something like this:
WNWN BM--WL SL
Here "WN" is "Wild North" from FO#3, "BM" is "Blackmarsh" as published on rpgnow.com, "SL" is "Southland" and "WL" is "Wild Land" from Points of Light by Goodman Games. According to the various "hints" left in Blackmarsh, it seems that the 100 mile gap between BM and WL is largely The Grey Sea and maybe some coastal territory (and islands?) that's "missing" for now? The "WN" map is larger than any of the others, but it actually fits exactly with the other descriptions as far as I can tell.
Can anyone, ideally Rob, confirm that I am correct so far? Or just tell me where I am wrong?
My next question is where the "Bright Empire" and the "Grand Empire" were/are in relation to Blackmarsh. It seems to me that the "Bright Empire" must have been to the east whereas the "Grand Empire" is to the south-west, the "Southland" being its north-eastern-most (and most recent) outpost? Also, is "SL" is where the Vikings in "BM" come from, displaced by the "Grand Empire" as it were?
Can anyone, ideally Rob, confirm that I am correct about this as well? Or again tell me where I am wrong?
And of course: Yay Blackmarsh! :-)
