I want to move Troop-type combat to 2d6 vs. target number instead of xd6 and compare each individually.
I'm not overly concerned about the exactly probability being the same, but looking for inspiration how to modify it into something and uses less dice for when I do overseas.

Well, the problem with 2d6 is that your spread is so puny: there's not a lot of room for much variation.

Smaller units. That will cut down the dice rolling and the expense of buying/painting the little figures.

For a 2d6 combat, just roll equal to or less than the AC to score a hit. In other words, against AC 9 (none) you hit on a 2-9 and against AC 2 (plate and shield) you hit on a 2 only. That's a really quick way to do it.

....why not just use the man to man tables? "2d6 and compare each individually" is exactly that.
What are you attempting to accomplish?

Both Finarvyn and gronanofsimmerya have simple and workable solutions, but I think it presents a slight logistical problem in that he's trying to run mass combats and the original mass combat system has less detail than the man-to-man or D&D alternative systems. It's not too difficult to arbitrarily pick weapon and armor for each unit, but if the setup was done using mass combat stats then units have only light/medium/heavy (or light/heavy/armored) descriptors rather than "axe and ring mail" or "AC 5". Small problem, but one I thought should be mentioned.

It's "was" now. Past tense, as in after the nuke hit.
