Loyal Beast takes a hard look at the coloring trying to determine if the red is paint or if it is in fact blood splashed against the white matte.
He whispers down the dino chain "White and vivid red rocky island up ahead. It's guarded by a gatehouse and drawbridge in the "up" position. Were about 6" out anyone want to swim or sneak around?
If nobody wants to sneak about from here Loyal Beast will push on ahead and see if anyone is on the other side of the drawbridge.

Shade swims far enough out from the pier to make line of sight with someone from the convoy of dinosaurs and communicates, **Something big in the water. Don't go in.**
Then he quickly swims back under the pier to the safety of the pylons.

Apothecaria says I'll know if it is blood or not. Shaking a little bit, she slides from the back of the bronto and silently into the water.

Noting the frantic gesturing of her red woman lieutenant, Apothecaria climbs back onto the dino.

"If this pier doesn't continue on past the island, we'll have to go into the water eventually anyway... but we may as well check out the island first, they may be able to give us information if they are not immediately xenophobic." Breath states.

Loyal Beast pushes big Al Forward to the edge of the pier looking towards the gatehouse. If after a moment of looking he sees nothing he will ask his three wraiths to fly out and investigate for anything living.

Hit Points
Heroes (4HD) Breath: 4d8 ( 6 + 7 + 6 + 6 ) = 25 Fated: 4d10 ( 6 + 10 + 4 + 5 ) = 25 Shade: 4d8 ( 1 + 2 + 1 + 1 ) = 5 (sorry buddy)
Veterans (1+1HD) Grand: 1d8 = 2 (ouch!) Beast: 1d12 = 2 (double ouch!)
Men/Women (1HD) Apothecaria: 1d12 = 5
Dinosaurs: Big Mama: 9d6 ( 6 + 1 + 2 + 5 + 4 + 3 + 6 + 4 + 2 ) = 33 Big Daddy: 9d12 ( 5 + 7 + 11 + 5 + 4 + 11 + 9 + 6 + 6 ) = 64 Little Brother: 8d8 ( 3 + 5 + 3 + 7 + 5 + 7 + 4 + 5 ) = 39 Princess: 4d8 ( 5 + 1 + 1 + 5 ) = 12 Snarf: 2d6 ( 5 + 4 ) = 9 Andre: 9d12 ( 4 + 8 + 8 + 4 + 4 + 11 + 6 + 2 + 2 ) = 49 Grekk: 9d4 ( 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 4 + 3 ) = 26 Grand’s Raptor: 4d10 ( 2 + 8 + 6 + 9 ) = 25 Big Al: 8d6 ( 5 + 5 + 6 + 2 + 2 + 4 + 1 + 1 ) = 26
(note: For large-scale battles like this, I’ll be getting out of the habit of rolling hit points for NPCs and henchmen. Rather, we’ll be using an abstract system where they can survive 1 wound per HD.)

Ugh, it might be a short unlife for Loyal Beast lol. Unfortunately his personality is more fitting of a bold warrior.

Only Loyal Beast (astride Big Al) and Sgt. Cannibal (riding Andre) can see the gatehouse. Everyone else is too far back in the fog. Beast (chance in 6 equal to his level, rolls 1, success!) would know the smell of blood anywhere, and deduces that the gore splattered all over the island is indeed blood of some type, and fresh (no more than 1 day old). From this distance he can't tell what type of rock the island is composed of, it appears to be a soft crumbly rock of matte white, like plaster or chalk.
As to the gatehouse, it is made from the same timbers as the pier, with a crenelated tower. The island is not impregnable; its rocky slopes are steep but not sheer, so a nimble human could shimmy up with a successful Climb check. Not much chance of getting the brontosauruses up there, though, if you can't find a way to lower the gate.
The 3 wraithlings flit off to investigate, skimming light as smoke over the surface of the water....

Ugh, it might be a short unlife for Loyal Beast lol. Unfortunately his personality is more fitting of a bold warrior. True although I am usually a generous DM applying damage to the mount rather than the rider. (Unless, say, an enemy soldier or small creature climbs up onto the dino with you )

Round 1 of the KRAKEN BATTLE
Thanks to Shade’s underwater scouting, the party is not surprised.
Initiative: Party 2, Kraken 6
Enter the KRAKEN!
1dd= 6 tentacles come whipping out of the fog, attacking the dinosaur train from the left/southern flank. Big Daddy is attacked! Big Momma is attacked! Big Al (no relation) is attacked! Princess is attacked! Little Brother is attacked by 2 tentacles!
Each tentacle attacks as 1 Medium Horse on the Mass/Troop combat table. vs. HH (Little Brother) it rolls 1 die per 2 tentacles and needs 6 to hit. They roll 1 die cumulatively but miss with a roll of 4. vs. MH (the other four dinosaurs) it rolls 1 die per tentacle, target 6 and rolls: 4, 1, 5, 5... all miss!
Blessedly the brontosaurs are not easily flattened. The tentacles smash into them but the dinosaurs keep their footing and are not pushed off the pier. The kraken WHIPS! its long tentacles back into the fog. (The body of the creature is hidden from view.) As the tentacles flex, they dislodge a shower of 1d100= 91 crab-tick parasites, each the size of a car tire, which rain down on the party, the pier, the howdahs, the dinosaurs, and into the water (uh oh for Shade and the Deep One). The tick crabs wiggle their claws and mouthparts in agitated gestures and look hungry! The tentacles themselves are out of sight but you hear a horrible churning of water as the immense beast prepares its next attack...
Thus concludes the enemy’s segment of Round 1. Your turn!

Loyal Beast of the Unknown Master shouts It's a KRAKEN! Wraiths if you hear me defend your master! Loyal Beast of the Unknown Master pulls out his two handed sword and aims to hack apart tire sized crab monsters. The wraithlings turn back from the gatehouse and skittle back to their master's side. They are 1HD so they always attack as normal troops. The crabs are sturdy things, not long-legged like spider crabs, but more like horseshoe crabs crossbred with ticks. Thus they defend as Armored Foot and the Light Foot wraiths roll 1 die per round between the 3 of them combined and kill a crab on 6. Against the MH tentacles it is the same odds: 1 die per 3 LF, 6 "kills" (inflicts 1 die damage). 2-hand sword is a devastating weapon vs. tentacles! Because Loyal Beast has a fighting capability of "1 man + 1" he may attack on the Man-to-Man table at +1 to hit. These are extra-tough tentacles, so they defend as Barded Horse. Even so, he only needs to roll 7+ on 2d6 to hit, decent odds! Despite their shells being plate-equivalent, the crab things are even easer targets for his mighty blade, only 5+ to hit. Of course I will roll all the dice, just explaining the Chainmail mechanics for benefit of the newcomers!

"Punjabis! Form up! Spears at the ready! Prepare to defend the Quee..er...brontosaurus!"
Grand Yet Mystifying wheels his dino steed with a cry "On Pegasus! On my brave Llamrei!", pulls his Howdah pistol and aims it the nearest crab parasites on the pier and fires both barrels. He will also try to direct his dino to attack (either bite or claw as appropriate)
(if the crabs things are swarming over the bronto, the Punjabis will stay mounts and try to kill them. If the crabs are on the pier only, the punjabis will dismount and defend it.)

OOC: Thanks Mush it's always good to know how things are being handled for combat.
Loyal Beast of the Unknown Master yells so Big Al can hear him. Big Al, chew up these little crab bastards!

Breath and her followers prepare to fire their howdah guns at the tentacles if they re-emerge. They will ignore the crab-things at the moment unless they are attacked. (They will melee with the crab-spiders in that case, saving the howdah shots for the tentacles).
Little Brother and Princess will stomp any nearby crab-spiders.
"Ready the radio beam turret!" Breath calls out ahead into the fog. "Activate the Shield!"

Fated directs Snarf to use ESP on the Kraken, see if we can learn anything from its thoughts. He directs his men to blast away at the ticks.

Snarf the Velociraptor probes the mind of the ancient Kraken.
A save vs. spells must be made, Snarf needs 16 and rolls: 14
Snarf is enthralled by the Kraken and dives gracefully from the pier! **The ocean! So beautiful!** are the dino's thoughts as it takes the plunge. Will Fated to Die hold on tight and ride with Snarf into the water, or jump off just in time?
Snarf is tied to Princess and Pegasus, who must save vs. wands: 11, 14.... just barely success! The rope snaps, breaking the dinosaur train, but preventing any other dinos from being pulled into the water.

The dinosaurs stomp!
Each of the dinosaurs bites, claws, stomps, shakes off, crushes, or tail-slaps (rider may describe if you wish) a number of crabticks equal to its HD. LH hits on 6, MH on 5+, HH on 4+
Big Mama (m): 9d6 ( 5 + 5 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 3 + 5 + 5 + 6 ) = 5 kills Big Daddy (m): 9d6 ( 1 + 2 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 2 + 3 + 3 + 2) = 2 kills Little Brother (h): 8d6 ( 6 + 6 + 2 + 2 + 6 + 2 + 4 + 6 ) = 5 kills Princess (m): 4d6 ( 3 + 4 + 1 + 6 ) = 1 kill Andre (m): 9d6 ( 5 + 1 + 6 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 2 + 5 + 3 ) = 3 kills Grekk (l): 9d6 ( 2 + 6 + 2 + 6 + 1 + 4 + 3 + 4 + 2 ) = 2 kills Pegasus (l): 4d6 ( 3 + 2 + 2 + 5 ) = no kills Big Al (m): 8d6 ( 3 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 5 + 2 + 1 + 4 ) = 1 kill
The dinosaurs kill 19 parasites between the lot of them, independent of their passengers' actions. 72 remain (we're going to need a lot of dice...)

The henchmen obey! Everybody gets +1 to hit due to the party's heroic leadership!
3 LF wraithlings roll 1 die between them and kill on 6: miss with a roll of 5! 5 LF yellow spearmen (attack as HF in this case) defend the dinosaurs against the blood-sucking parasites, roll 2 dice, 6 kills: 2, 7 and skewer 1 of the ticks (71 left) Gunnery powers up the radio beam turret preparing to zap the tentacles on Round 2. His 3 orange men blast with both barrels ( 3 + 3 + 6 + 5 + 6 + 6 ) and kill 6 (65) Minion pushes the Shield button and waits anxiously to see what happens. (The party hasn't used it before, to the best of my recollection.) His 3 bone men fire both barrels: ( 5 + 2 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 6 ) and kill 6 ticks (59 left). 6 cannibal pikemen roll 18 dice and kill 8 ticks (51 left) Apothecaria and her troops rain down slingstones, 4+ kills: 4, 5 and kill 2 ticks (49 left) The 4 ulfires blast with both barrels ( 2 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 5 + 3 + 1 ) and kill 7 (42 left)

The PC's act!
Waiting on Fated's reaction to his steed's insanity... Shade and his deep one spend the round climbing back onto the pier. Breath steadies her troops and aims her pistol skyward to defend against the tentacles. Beast hacks with his dire sword: 8 and cleaves right through one of the parasites! (41 are left) Grand fires with both barrels (5, 6) and fells two of the tire-sized crab-ticks! (39 are left)
The Shield sputters to life, protecting Andre, Big Daddy, Big Mama, Princess, and Grand's raptor Pegasus from tentacle attacks (but not from the ticks that are already crawling all over them).

[5, 2] Sgt. Cannibal's shots both find their mark and now there are only 37 crab-tick-parasites left in the game!
[good catch---how could I forget the Sgt.?!?]
Anyone else I skipped before we move on to Round 2?
