Gary Gygax photo by Rhuvein. Interior art by Santiago Luis “Zulgyan” Oría (2, 30), Kesher (3), Andrew Reyes (5, 24, 26), James Maliszewski (8), Stefan Poag (11,14), Gabor Lux (12), Calithena (17), Tomás Banzas “Germille” Illa (22, 25), Coffee (29). We also used public domain art from karenswhimsy.com/ (19, 20) and www.wpclipart.com (27). I'm really pumped about this. We came in at 30 pages. The only thing that's going to suck a little is that when lulu tacks on postage the cost for buying just one issue could be close to $10. That's not totally crazy but it's too high. If I ordered some for myself and direct mailed them I could get them to people in the lower 48 for $5 per copy, which seems much better, and I might be able to go even lower if I found a local printer. But first things first, let's get the issue done and out there, and then figure out alternative methods of distribution etc.

Most excellent, Calithena!
I'll happily spend a ten spot on this. I'm assuming it's in 'LBB' booklet size (I seem to recall reading that was your intent in an earlier post).
Getting that first issue out will be the most difficult, so congratulations on bringing this project so far along already.

I just ordered a test issue for myself before promoting it/making it public. I went ahead and made it general distro so if you're hard-core and want an early copy it may be available with a lulu search in the next 24 hours or so. I'll promote it to the public once I've made sure the dummy's OK and had time to make sure there aren't any gross print errors. This appears to be the purchase link: www.lulu.com/commerce/index.php?fBuyContent=2355416I'd caution that I haven't held this in my hands yet and it may contain flaws. You might want to wait until next week if you want to be sure of a good copy.

And here's the direct page: www.lulu.com/content/2355416The one thing I'd really like to change for the 'official' print is the cover background. I just couldn't manage to get parchment onto the PDF the right way, the pictures kept covering it up. Don't know if this is worth working on or not, the white's OK too, but if anyone knows how to do that and thinks it's worth it get in touch with me. I can find that page above searching for ignatius umlaut but not for Fight On!. That's a problem...I want our mag name to bring up the issue! Maybe it will settle in in a bit...

I love the cover.
Do people plan on sticking with their board names for credits? It seems like something to take it less seriously, which maybe I'm taking it too seriously. =)

Hi Busman -
Totally serious, non-flip response: we'd love to have an article from you with your real name next to it.
Some people use their screen names for anonymity. I use mine mostly because I've been using it so long people in the gaming world know me better by it than by my real name.
It's all good as far as I'm concerned! Ignatius has a slight preference for real names, but only slight.

Cal, I'm super-thrilled to hear that you're so quickly ready to publish the first issue! Great work! I'm looking forward to reading the articles everybody else wrote.
As much as I think a parchment background would be great on the cover, please don't drive yourself nuts on one last little detail.

Cal, that looks spectacular! I love the intro, and the layout is nice and clean. I cannnnnnooooot wait to read this... Great job to you, and to everyone who submitted material. And to everyone who buys an issue. And to everyone who plays ODD, especially those who start playing BECAUSE of this publication... Okay. I'll stop. But really, Cal, we all owe you beers! Heck, I'll come to the table with scotch (and three little brown books...)

I have to agree with all of the above comments -- it looks great!
Hang the expense, I'm ordering mine tonight! Maybe I'll get a "first printing" with typos and stuff, and I'll be the envy of all the guys who wait and have to get their "original collector's edition".

Thanks for all the positive feedback, folks. I'll promote this here and elsewhere once I've got the issue in my hands and I'm sure it's OK.
I want to give a special thank you to Jeff Rients. He gave me the push on this that got the whole thing rolling, submitted three articles, collaborated well with others, and got Andrew Reyes to do that amazing cover and several wonderful pieces of interior art. I wanted to have a line declaring him "Senior Executive Vice Editor" just for all his good work, but I didn't have an editorial masthead at all as it turned out. Maybe next time...
And of course many thanks to all our contributors and boosters as well. I think this is going to be the start of something special, but as with all things only time will tell.

I prefer anonymity. Of course, I can easily make up a pen name if calithena would like.

Looks totally amazing. I'm totally excited. My little critter made it to the second page, great! ;D
I would like to suggest that:
"for Fantasy Role Playing Campaigns played with Pencil, Paper and Your Imagination"
should be changed to:
"for Fantasy Role Playing Campaigns playable with Pencil, Paper and Your Imagination"
So as to better match the original booklets.
Will there be a PDF version of the zine??
Shipment costs to Argentina will be extremely high.

Hi Zulg,
Not a bad suggestion. There will be a PDF version sooner or later but not right away. I'll have more discussion of that here with your input welcome in a week or two after I get back from this real life conference and get the print version of this issue finalized, promoted, etc.
Thanks for all your help!
Best,
Sean

I prefer anonymity. Of course, I can easily make up a pen name if calithena would like. I think this is a great idea, actually. When reading an article penned by r0x0rz34tIt!!~!!1!, I personally would have a harder time taking it seriously than if it were penned by Alan Smithee, for example. Not that we have anyone with any sweet board names here. PS: Ordered my copy!

I am touched by the sentiment, but there is no need to heap titles upon me. Credit as a contributor is quite sufficient.

Take this as just positive and constructive criticism. I've read every word of the preview, and loved it. The contents are great so far. The wizard duel pic, fabulous. I was so intrigued about the rest of jame's dungeon!
But the logo is something I'm not been very crazed at. It's done by the amazing Jeff Rients and I hate to say I'm not liking it very much ¿why the shinny green color? Again, this is just constructive criticism for an even better logo (anyway, this subject is highly subjective and really a matter of taste in the end). The logo is nice, but I think something like this would be even cooler, for me.
FIGHT ON!
FIGHT ON[./size]![./i][./size][./b]
A nicer font type could be used instead. Note that the exclamation mark raises higher than the rest of the phrase.
Of course this is just a suggestion. And a very subjective one. I'm totally happy with the magazine as it is. I just want to collaborate, if my comments are of any help.

I'm sure adjustments can always be made to the logo going forward. The Dragon redid their title easily 6 or more times over time.

I was unsure about the logo at first, but it's really grown on me. We can certainly change the color from issue to issue to suit us, and if we feel like it we can make a different one later, but give it a little time.
Anyway, I'll be mostly out of touch for the next few days, hopefully when I come back I'll have a perfect copy from lulu ready and we'll make the announcement for general distribution.

I like the preview; and am not sure if I should give into the temptation and order the alpha copy now, or wait for the finished deal... Decisions, decisions. What would be really cool if the fanzine or at least its cover could be printed on the kind of paper initial JG installments were made with - I mean like this. Probably impossible to do with Lulu, though.

Zulgyan - I take no offense at anyone not liking the logo. The color was intentionally selected for its luridness. And it was my first go at making a logo. I have mixed feelings about the results, but we needed a logo and no one else came forward, so I did what I could. If anyone makes a better one (myself included) I will heartily endorse replacing my little effort.

There will be a PDF version sooner or later but not right away. I'd love to see a PDF copy too, like Zulgyan, I find the costs of posting items outside the US a bit prohibitive sometimes.
