Hello everybody,
For some bizarre reason I can't seem to wrap my head around the Alternate Combat System present in page 13 of the Supplement 1: Greyhawk booklet. I think the mention of the Chainmail tables is totally throwing me off.
Basically I want to make sure that I understand how to use the bonuses listed on the table. I'll provide an example in order to see whether I'm getting it or not.
Jose the Fighting-Man ( who has a strength score of 17) attacks a creature (AC 5) with a battle axe. He rolls 1d20 + 2 (STR bonus + 1 (bonus listed on weapon table); He scores a hit if the result is equal to or greater than the number listed in the Attack Matrix in the Men & Magic booklet.
Does that sound right to you guys?

Yes, that is my understanding.
Please note that with this system, defensive bonuses (from armor, etc) are modifiers to the die roll; they'd totally mess up the whole table if they modified the Armor Class directly (as they do in other editions).

Thanks for the help Coffee! By "defensive modifiers" are you referring to Parry and Magical Armor ? Doesn't the table on p.15 say that magical armor adds "to score required on combat table" ? (This table is even more confusing than the one on p. 13. LOL!)

Yes, it adds to the score required. It doesn't change the armor class itself.
Here's an example:
You have AC 6. I have a Morningstar. Therefore, I get +1 to hit you. If you got a +1 defensive bonus, say from a magic shield, I have a harder time hitting you. I'd have to subtract 1 from my to hit score.
But if it changed your armor class (to AC 5), my bonus would be +2 -- it would be easier for me to hit you!
This was changed (effectively) in AD&D, and even more so in later editions.

Hey, Tony!
I don't have anything to add--coffee, as usual, is extraordinarily explicatory...

Although I have a hard time letting go d6-only, Chainmail- combat resolution! Ohhh well, out with the "old" and in with the slightly less "old." --- Hello Kesher! Long time no see my friend!

Thank you so very much Coffee! Always happy to help! Do let us know how that goes for you! I've never used these tables, myself; they always seemed a bit fiddly. But I could be wrong.

Really? How do you resolve martial conflicts in your fantastic medieval wargames? Straight-up volume 1. These particular ( Greyhawk) tables are the ones I've never used. I never even saw them until I'd been playing AD&D for a couple of years. And we never used the similar tables in AD&D. Everybody in the group thought they were fiddly (but that wasn't the term they used). (My understanding is that even Gary Gygax didn't use them for the most part.)
