I prefer the 26th edition. These days Platemail plays just like Pong.

Wow, this is really cool! I love the artwork, and the Tunnels and Trolls like atmosphere. Have an exalt ;D

I refereed Platemail twice last year. Character generation is very funny (although, one may want to let re-roll absolutely useless characters), the skirmish and duelling combat systems are easy to handle, and the spells (along with the rules for casting them) are gorgeous. I can only recommend it.

This looks like a good giggle. An exalt for the OP.
At last I can have a one-hit-wonder!

There has been an update to the rules and first level characters don't fall over quite so quickly now.

Is there a good place to find the latest version of these rules? The Yahoo group seems to be inactive.

I've been scouring the internet for a month or so now, trying to find any updates or contact the original creator, and it seems this is the latest version still. I joined this board specifically to see if anyone else has any leads on this? I'm rather taken with this game and I'd love to see it completed.

The rules seem unwieldy, but I love the spells.

The rules seem unwieldy, but I love the spells. We very much enjoyed the basic mechanics, but for us it was the spell list that was the least polished. I think it could be easily redesigned for various styles but as it is, makes great rules for the old dungeon crawls.

I dig any game where my character can start out with syphilis. Or a peg-leg. Actually, both would be ideal...

It doesn't really have much of a following around here. Let's just say there are other choices, arguably closer to the source material, or preferred for other reasons. Not trying to discourage you from enjoying whatever you like best at all, just being honest. The same fellow produced a controversial (for IP reasons) game called Fullmetal Platemail.

Thank you for the reply Aldarron. Anyone know if I can somehow get in touch with the creator? Has he got a public email or a blog somewhere?

I'm not sure if 27th edition Platemail and Fullmetal Platemail are by the same author. The later of the two is by a member called Leonaru. Both documents can be found on his web page along with a number of other retro-clones. There's contact info there and you could try messaging him here. Link>> Taxidermic Owlbear
