After what was at least a 25 year hiatus, I am finally starting a new Gangbusters campaign. Thanks to the wonders of Google +, two of my original Gangbusters players and I are heading back to Lakefront City for some serious mayhem.
The PCs will be private investigators who get sucked into the war between the Tolinos and the O'Connors. I just recently completed my collection of GB modules, so I'm pillaging as much of those as I can. I can't believe I didn't have GB1 back in the day. What a great old school module!
My friend and I played all of the old TSR games in the '80s. I always considered the GB rules to be the best of all of TSR's non D&D games (Boot Hill was a close second). I'm very interested to see how that opinion holds up 25 years later.

Ah, delightful! It's been about that long for me as well and I share your sentiments. Upon having a renaissance to the hobby about 2 years ago after such a long hiatus, Gangbusters was one of the first boxed sets I sought out. I've since completed my collection, but have had far too few opportunities to play. Aside from having the opportunity to meet Rick, and a few short games with my boys, my love of the game has been limited to multiple reads of the books. Someday! Someday!

I, for one, would love to hear how your game goes. Session write-ups? Or audio?

Well, it was only two of us so we practiced a fist fight, a gun fight, and a car chase. The PC got into a fist fight at the 4 Deuces after he accidentally spilled his drink on a gangster. They traded blows until the PC picked up the gangster and slammed him on the bar. The gangsters drunk buddy across the room pulled a pistol and started firing. The PC wisely ducked down behind a table and used it for cover. They traded shots for several rounds. The PC took a graising wound to his left shoulder, and the table blocked a shot to his gut. The gangster took a shot to the left arm, the chest, and the gut, dropping him. The PC walked up and used his last round to coup de grace. On the way out of the bar, a police whistle was blowing down the street. The PC jumped into his car and got it started as a patrolman unloaded his pistol into the car, disabling it. The PC got out on the running board and put two shots into the patrolmans gut, dropping him to 1 HP. The patrolman dropped to the ground clutching his stomach. The PC gave him a tap on the head with his pistol butt to keep him from any heroics.
I'll list my observations, in no particular order.
- If you're using the expert rules there is a lot of page flipping. I already have a custom screen whipped up for next session, so this will become a non-issue. - You can take a lot of bullets. This gives GB a pulpier feel than I remember. The luck mechanic was also something I had forgotten about. - The combat rules leave a lot of room for GM interpretation. They seem crunchy at first, but they are actually a little vague in spots. For example there is no real system for determining who goes first if two characters are just trading shots/blows with each other. I need to give the rules a more solid read through.

I forgot to say that we had a blast. I think after a few sessions of massaging out the bumps, it will be even better.
