I've never liked level limits, but I was thinking the other day what if when you hit the limit in one class, you can just start working on another?
I guess as far as hit points go, you can keep a separate tally for each class, and the character gets the highest amount.
Has anybody tried this? Does the idea have any merit?

As long as you have additional racially-accessible classes, I suppose it would work. But by the book, there's no additional class for elves, dwarves, and halflings to switch to... They could switch to thief, if you're using Greyhawk, but the Greyhawk rules also assume that only humans can "switch" classes, while non-humans are stuck in the classes they begin play with. I once proposed allowing non-humans to switch to any class, even the normally banned classes, as long as they start with the normal class for their race and have a 16+ in the prerequisite for the new class they want to switch to (just like for humans switching classes.) Thus, part of the reason for dwarf adventurers and halfling adventurers may be because they're looking for a way to raise their abilities, so that they can become a cleric or magic-user, as they've always dreamed of. I also once proposed a smith class and a miner class that were unlimited for dwarves, because it's their preferred class. Functionally, these work like the thief class, with appropriate skill substitutions, and a dwarven fighter/smith or fighter/miner works the same way that an elven fighter/magic-user does.

I'm an all supplements kind of guy. They could switch to thief and bard. I think the difference between humans switching and demi-humans switching would be that humans switch at any point, demi-humans only once they've capped. And maybe they don't get to switch until qualifying for the level after the cap.
