EdOWar wanted to run an X-Plorers online game. It's loosely based on S&W, which we support, but is clearly somewhat different. You can download a freebie PDF here if you want to take a peek. I was asked once to allow a Lords of Creation online game and (even though it's a Tom Moldvay creation) I decided it was too far from our primary focus and said "no". I wasn't sure allowing X-Plorers was a good idea or not, since it goes a ways from the manifesto of these boards. My initial thought was do deny the request. Then I realized that my name is in the "thanks" section of the free PDF download, so I wavered a little. I thought I'd start a poll on this and possibly give it my blessing. What do you think? Should we have an onine X-Plorers game, or is that too far from our OD&D focus?

I tracked down the thread on Dragonsfoot where Grubman described his process for developing X-Plorers if anyone is interested.

Thanks for putting this poll up, Fin.
Once we know whether the community would endorse an X-Plorers game I'll post info on the campaign itself.

Well, I don't want to be a jerk or anything, but I'd rather not spread ourselves out too thin. Fin's "manifesto" thing said OD&D and older TSR, and while it's a fine game XPlorers isn't either of those two things. I don't really want to start diversifying too much. That's just me.

I don't post or play here so maybe my vote shouldn't count, but I read these boards alot and don't want to get too much non-OD&D content here. I have other boards for other games.

X-Plorers looks good, but I think it should not be here, any more than Traveller would be. Not trying to be a jerk about it - I run other online games, but not here because they are not OD&D.

No sharp advice, but if was no (and it seems so), it could be welcome maybe on Goblinoid games forum, and for sure on rpol - where some of us plays various games. There's a lot of grognards there.

I voted no, but hated to do it. The subject matter of X-plorers, more than the system, just doesn't seem to fit in on this forum. Like Makofan wrote above, I think X-plorers looks like a good game, but like Traveller, just doesn't fit here. OTOH, I'd certainly enjoy *playing* in an old-school X-plorers game...here or elsewhere. It isn't hard to set up a forum on proboards.com...and it's free. Then there is rpol.net, again free, and built just for running games. Maybe you could have a place here for members to "advertise" their online games. Finarvyn it's your forum and if you want to make an exception for EdOWar's game, I wouldn't complain about it.

I voted for yes, but I see the logic of your arguments against.
In any case, if you do run this online somewhere, let me know where! Thanks!

I respect Fin's moderation and tight control of the OD&D Board. I appreciate that he's made some space available for discussion of other topics, but he keeps a good control over the theme of the board. I would recommend XPlorers be played in a place like rpol or Google Wave.

I don't have an interest in playing it, but I don't see a problem with a PBP on this forum given that there are subsections for games like Gangbusters, Boot Hill, Metamorphosis Alpha, and Gamma World.

Well it seems the community is trending against it, so I'll formally withdraw the request.
Thanks to Finarvyn for the poll and to everyone for their comments. I completely understand the desire to keep the focus on OD&D, I just thought maybe X-Plorers was close enough to OD&D to make the cut.
I'll look into some of the other sites mentioned; if I get something up and running elsewhere I'll post a link to it here for those interested.

Ed, if you need a Google Wave invite, let me know - I have plenty. I've found it a fun way to conduct a PbP and I would be interested in following along. I'm curious about the utility of your game in possibly running a Star Trek like game.

I checked out rpol.net and it seems like it would work pretty well, so I think I might go with that. I'm not familiar with Google Wave, so if you believe it is superior to rpol.net, please enlighten me. As written X-Plorers is a very human centric game. However, it would be fairly easy to adapt it to a Star Trek like game. Just add some PC alien races and tinker with the weapons and equipment a bit.

Sorry I arrived late to this poll, I would have voted yes. Of course, that is because recently I have acquired X-plorers and started working on my own supplement (Boarding Action) which will add more of a D&D feel to the game (think megadungeon on space).

I've been reading your blog about that. It sounds very interesting. I look forward to reading more about how it develops. And Lemurians just sound like a really cool race--though, I'm thinking of them as more of space ferrets I guess (with laser pistols, no less, hehe).

@ed - having not used rpol, only aware of it by reputation, I can't speak to it.

Yeah, I've been reading that, too. Good stuff! I've been meaning to introduce myself on the list, myself. I have some data on Carriers I've been meaning to post.

I am playing a game on rpol right now, it even has a dice roller. It seems pretty good.
