Seems like there is always more to be found in Supp II Temple of the Frog every time you look.
Today I noticed this: (room 3, page 41) ..."nine mounted gargoyles mounted as statues... which are released from thier temporal stasis if anyone enters the room without a Priest..."
"They will lurk about after thier duty is performed until a priest comes down to put them back in to thier imprisonment. This feat... and its procedure is outlined in a book found in the library."
Lost high level cleric spell "Bind Gargoyle" perhaps? Any ideas how this spell should work?

hmm. The description seems to be saying the gargoyles creatures have been ensorcled to in a state of non animation and are realeased from that state under specific conditions (intruders). Not so much that they are animated statues. <shrug>

Isn't there a 'temporal stasis' spell in ad&d? Like time stop, but reversed.

Maybe this is how Flesh to Stone works on Gargoyles?

The MU spell creastes a similar frozen state, but to be undone a dispell magic must be cast or the spell reversed. It's MU and not clerical and doesn't dispell on a trigger as this spell does, but the AD&D spell could be reworked to fit, I think.

Based only on what is written, I'd guess it was just a unique notation here without a detailed explanation as to how it works, and not a reference to a specific spell. It's an interesting idea for gargoyles though.

It's an interesting idea for gargoyles though. Yeah, don't think it was a spell ever written up in game terms, but there an idea of a spell here. I wrote one up based on the entry and put it in the Book of Elder Magic.
