Hey. With all the momentum of late to get Tekumel out and in front of the retro and modern rpg crowds, I was thinking it might be interesting to create a "demo team" of Tekumel GMs. You wouldn't have to be a complete Tekumelphile/aficionado either, as the module in question would be relatively simple in format. I was considering writing a very simple GM Demo module of Tekumel based upon original:EPT rules, and upon the notes that badger2305 has provided in his "You too can run... " thread. I would obviously love the input of all of the long time Tekumel GMs here and on the Tek yahoo board. Something that could be pre-packaged for even first or secondtime Tekumel GMs to get local players "up to snuff" on Tekumel basics. In line with what badger2305 has done for the You too can run Tekumel thread, but pre-packaged, easy to download. Basically, similar to the offerings that were done for "Free RPG Day", if you took part in that in recent months. In effect, create a GM Demo Pack, in nice NEW style format, for a tride and true game/setting. Make it feel new/fresh, but play old school - which we all obviously strive for otherwise we wouldn't be at this forum Why wait on NEW rules, why not just re-package the original so to speak, showing folks they can easily run Tekumel by just sticking to the simple bullet items of the setting and the original rules. Just a thought...

IMO the intro module should show off Tekumel in a number of different ways--cultural differences, the clan, religion, the pulpy feel, and so on... you know, something that hits all the high points with some good old school richness... sandboxiness plus plot parameters that bring the newbies up the learning curve fast, we could take some hints from the "growing up on" sort of approach... more so than anything, in my view, the key to every story, to every rpg adventure, is this: what does the character want more than anything else out of life? Everything else is props in a way, varied means, obstacles, and so on, so put this into terms that make sense for a Tsolyani character...

The original impetus for this in my crazed mind was something similar to the weekly "D&D Encounters" by WOTC. Something that would provide, as soundchaser hints at, perhaps a varied emphasis for a, just throwing this out there, 4 week long / run once a week for 1hr-2hr 'event'. I was also hoping, again similar to how Free RPG Day and D&D Encounters approaches this idea, is to supply a quick play version of the original rules. Something that gives the basic mechanics, 4+ sample characters there-of, and several encounters within one simple demo module. And yes soundchaser, I do think the original "Adventures" books would be a good thing to somewhat mimic. Let me come up with a mock table of contents to start with, then perhaps folks can inject advise there-after? Again, the intent is a quickplay package for NEW GMs to taste the setting ; not just old hands to run games, but for new GMs to run them as well. That's my intent at least.

Great idea. I would run this at a shop in Pittsburgh... need to plan the "run up" part of it, too, so that sufficient word spreads and people can have groups who'll show up and be consistent... maybe some kind of nifty deal with a shop owner helping in some way with a promo to make customers/players happy with their investment? Also, the download thing could be set up at www.tekumel.com perhaps? It would be an intro that has to include a brief run down of mechanics, the basics concerning the setting (btw, the way that setting books in 4e work, there's a lot of white space and well-crafted simple wording to it all). I'll join in:) I have adventure design xp (not tons, not recent) but lots of love for the EPT setting...

I think something along these lines would need to line up well with potentially new "product", be it a new RPG for Tekumel, or newly minted PDF for sale of all of the old product. We'll see how that pans out before anything major. But in the meantime, a Demo set for new GMs should be a do-able first goal. Perhaps those GMs could go grab up some Tekumel minis from the Tekumel Project, and offer a nice tabletop setting to boot. At least that would be my initial goal in any hobby shop I might hold a demo in.

I've been pondering, and it seems appropriate to tie any intro scenario and GM kit to the GOO rules (and perhaps to EPT too); partly this would enable some newbies to come to the table and be able to hunt down a copy of a top notch book (they are out there, I own three and always see the edition creep up in the sales forums at rpg.net and at ebay).
Likewise, pregen characters and a brief overview of mechanics, maneuvers, and the like, would help people... the hurdle here is getting solid characters in place at a fun campaign level, then put them into a good "show off Tekumel" situation.

I like the idea of creating new material for the game. I'm working on a introductory scenario right now for brand new players that I hope to run at RockCon in Nov. If all goes over well, perhaps I'll talk to Victor about getting in published.

Yes, I know, but I was aiming not at mechanical elements of the GOO game but the great compilation of setting fluff there... coherent, compact, and such. Much of the setting info elsewhere is very dense, the GOO resource (or anything distilled from it) could be a reasonable ground of an intro kit.

Me! Me! Pick me!
I'd love to playtest this material when it is written. I love the idea. Give a small scenario, rules overview, GM advice, and a set of resources.

Brett: I'll email you on this. I think it still holds merit to come up with a nicely laid out introduction to Tekumel "set". I also think having 'new hands' (I'm still relatively new) and 'long time fans' meet half way would be a good way to ensure it is approachable by new players and old alike. I would like to see what Jeff Dee comes up with in his newer pocket universe based ruleset for Tekumel, which is in the works, before doing anything semi-official or official (if we can get Foundation write-off). As I'd love to key it into his newer product, while still pointing out the fact that the setting can be approached with od&d, or just about any system you can think of using. At least that is the approach I originally intended. There are some fundamentals to get it to be "Tekumel" but otherwise, the system can be bent however you see fit to suit your GM style or player sentiment. And if anyone here missed some of the recently relayed foundation news, check out the news repository here - skeinofdestiny.blogspot.com/The more and more I think about it, I think an 0e re-write of the original EPT using Swords & Wizardy would be a nice "langua franca" for the old school crowd to re-approach this classic. - Peter Robbins

The more and more I think about it, I think an 0e re-write of the original EPT using Swords & Wizardy would be a nice "langua franca" for the old school crowd to re-approach this classic. Why not LotFP as Jeremy Duncan has suggested? LotFP has skill rules and the 'specialist' character class which may come in handy in such a project.
