I'm a bit uncertain about even starting this thread, because I'm not a big fan of intellectual piracy, but since I've bought these rules twice already...
I own the original Empire of the Petal Throne rulebook from the '70's boxed set and recently bought the same rulebook in what turned out to be an image-scanned PDF. What I really want is this rulebook in a Word doc or a PDF where I can copy and paste. Anyone know if this is out there somewhere?
I'm also aware of the Guardians of Order version of Tekumel, and own a copy of that hardback. I'm not sure I want to buy a PDF of that one or not, since I really like the original version better than the TriStat version.

Since you have the original, shouldn't be too hard to OCR in a copy for yourself. Most scanners bundle the OCR software. Unless of course you don't _have_ a scanner. =

Actually, I don't have a scanner. There is a scanner at work, but it seems only to generate images instead of OCR docs.
In other words, I could create an illegal version of the file that would be virtually identical to the one I bought, but I can't make one that does what I thought I was buying.
That's what you call ironic.

What I really want is this rulebook in a Word doc or a PDF where I can copy and paste. Anyone know if this is out there somewhere? What PDF reader do you have? I have Acrobat Reader 7.something, and it allows me to copy text. Check to see if there's a 'text cursor' on the toolbar. If there is, click it, highlight your text, and then his ctrl-c. That's what I do, and it works even on stuff I scanned as images. Hope this helps.

I'm using Adobe 7 and usually don't have any problem with my store-bought PDF's, so this one must be security locked or some such. I wish they would tell a customer that when we shop, because I would never have spent $11 on this book since I could have just xeroxed a few key pages. The PDF is only useful to me when I can copy-paste text. :-(

Bummer.
And I just read this morning that they've found a way to put advertising in PDFs, also. Which will be another reason I vastly prefer hard copy.

Unless you can find some way around the password lock, I think you're screwed. I just got my first-ever scanner, and haven't tried the OCR yet -- but it's neat being able to "digitize" my dungeon maps!

Actually, I'm not sure. What I wanted in Word most were the parts that talk about the history of Tekumel and some of the background material. (Well, the whole rulebook is what I had hoped to get, but a lot of the historical information is what I want to absorb before I get around to reminding myself how the actual rules work. It's been so long since I read the rules that I wanted to get into the "mood" part first, and hit the game mechanic second.)

As the fellow who put the files in place on DriveThruRPG, let me see what I might do to help out.
If you scan in a portion of the text and then OCR it as a sample, that's not beyond fair use (though I am not a copyright lawyer). if you can be a little more patient, the Tekumel Sourcebook will be a text-readable PDF file.
Email me if you have specific questions. Thanks!

As the fellow who put the files in place on DriveThruRPG, let me see what I might do to help out. Nice to see another celebrity poster on the boards. Welcome! Badger, thanks for the information. I was really surprised to find that the EPT rulebook was so security-tight, because I've bought many other PDF files form DriveThru and never had these particular issues. I'll see if there is any way to do some OCR-fu, but I'm not good at that stuff so who knows. Maybe someone at work can help me out. :-(

There are pages on the history and background on www.tekumel.comAnd the Sourcebook as a PDF will assist appreciation of Tekumel no end! (as the dead-tree versions already do!)

T:EPT is good for giving stories to get a person into the world. EPT had a good introduction but the Swords and Glory V1 Sourcebook is the best. Look up Tita's House of games for that and other "Classic" Tekumel stuff. As for scanners, dungeon maps and such, well I own an A3 scanner and a 24" wide format printer that will do up to 150' long banners in full color. I've been gathering all the Tekumel art and maps that I can and putting them on disk to print out later but only with permission. I put the old Jakalla map on disk and I printed out a copy for myself so that I could retire my old map back to the archives. Then I copied the For. Quart. due to its high use at a copy house.
