I'm doing a thorough, line-by-line analysis of the dungeon lists (p. 30 ff.) and am encountering some oddities in the notations. In the descriptions of the stocking of BM dungeons many entries have two numbers before HTK. Does anyone know what that means? E.g. "16 Giant Snakes: AC 2, 10/28 HTK". This is commonplace and I don't understand what they mean. They even occur when there is a single creature defined. Sir Fang's triple HTK listing is another strange datum.

yes, Snake example; 10 HD, 28 HP
Arneson used the / to indicate different stat categories.
the three stats for Sir fang is a mystery still, had some idea about that I have forgotton and might have had something to do with the slavic vampire business, but one thing I've guessed before is that the HTK for fang might represent different forms (gaseous, wolf, man) or somthing like that.

Thanks! It didn't occur to me the 10 was HD. I looked at the stats for Sir Fangs-a-Lot and thought exactly the same thing! I assumed it was a ref to the vampire lore of multiple forms (mist/fog, bat/wolf, human), although I don't know which was which. I'll finish with my analysis of the dungeon info and work it into an essay of sorts to present, along with questions. Interesting material, but the cryptic nature of these listings really makes me furrow the brow with frustration sometimes. I get the feeling I'm going to have to find an Enigma Machine to decipher this stuff. I can actually hear Dave saying "Heh, heh, heh! Make 'em work for it! I didn't want it to be easy for them!"
