What I like about C&C is the AD&D-3E blend, which keeps some "modern" elements along with an old school feel. I admit I am baffled by the allure of the “modern” elements. Do they really add anything to the RPG experience?

What I like about C&C is the AD&D-3E blend, which keeps some "modern" elements along with an old school feel. I admit I am baffled by the allure of the “modern” elements. Do they really add anything to the RPG experience? Heck, I don't know if they "add" anything, but sometimes I like them better. For example: (1) Ascending AC. I've used something similar for decades and like it better. (2) Why should clerics have spells level 1-7 while magic users are 1-9? Seems kind of odd. Plus, I like the 0-level cantrip idea. Some of my players are more familiar with the newer edition, so they are more used to newer spell lists. (3) The classes all fit together well, whereas in OD&D there are two general types -- white box and Greyhawk varieties -- that don't always mesh well. (For example, d6 hit dice v. dMany. Fighting Capability for some classes, not for others. Etc.) Anyway, that's part of the alllure for me.
