Fated to Die: "Tell me more about the cave, boy." He looks scared. "I ain't never been to the cave mister! I don't break THE LAW!" Then he whispers, "... but they say you can see it from the Church bell-tower at night ..."

Fated to Die: "I'm not asking you to break the Law, boy... I'm quite a lawful person myself. But surely you have heard rumors of what lairs within...?"

"They won't tell me until I'm older," the boy says meekly. "Everybody in town goes to Church, but only the favorites are invited to the secret Church-on-the-Hill to worship the Mountain God."

The Sovereign Mask follows behind, allowing his companion to question the boy.

Fated to Die: "And who are these favorites?" The Orphan stares at you in wide-eyed terror and clutches the second duffle-bag to his chest like a security blanket. He mumbles something unintelligible. "Speak up, boy!" shouts Fated to Die. The child turns a paler shade of green at the imposing Ulfire Man. "... the Church-Mamas, they chooses they's favorite lady from town, 'n they go up in the hills, when they come back the lady never speak a word never again ... can I go home now mister?"

"This is fascinating, Fated to Die. I wouldn't have expected they'd come back at all. I wonder what happens to them, and just who.. or what... this so-called Mountain God is."

Breath of New Moon has also accompanied Fated to the swimming hole. However, rather than bathing she stands on much as a statue, keeping watch.

The little boy's teeth are chattering and his skin is goose-pimpled from the cold water. "C-c-can I go home now mister?"

Fated to Die: "You want to return to town? What a boring life. Go then. May the Mountain God smile upon you."
Fated finishes washing up, then to the others:
"Shall we make for the tavern to rejoin the others? I'd like to tell them about what we've learned."

The Orphan shyly collects his duffel-bags and scampers back to town, leaving the five of you (Fated, Pack Slave, Sovereign Mask, Minion, and Breath to finish your bath and process these new rumors...

"It sounds like there's more in this cave than meets the eye," says the Sovereign Mask of All Who See. Then he mutter, "Maybe even enough to buy breakfast in the morning."

Fated to Die: "I feel an acute need of gold pieces. Where best to find them - in yon cave, or in Arkham where we may have access to a home?"
"Shall we walk to the tavern? We should gather our drunks and discuss..."

Breath of New Moon: "Indeed, the cave may prove worth investigating, but not without some risk if we wish to stay on the good side of the Train Men. To locate the cave, it seems one of us may need to find a way into the church bell-tower tonight."

Minion will go along to join the tavern-goers. "I agree, Breath of New Moon. Someone with a talent for going unseen."

For those who wish to join their companions at The Gorge (d6 = 3) the trip is uneventful, and you may post in the Chapter 7 thread.
Anyone who wishes to remain in Aylesbury (for whatever reason) may continue to post here.

Breath of New Moon decides to stay in town for a while. She scouts the church (and the bell-tower) to the best of her ability without arousing suspicion. Specifically, she's looking for how difficult it may be to access at night (locked doors, adjacent residences, watchmen, etc...)

Breath casually strolls around town and observes the church.
With the town's menfolk away in the Tunnel, the only activity is the Matrons shuffling quietly about. They move back and forth between the church and an unassuming building behind and to the right of it, perhaps their residence or office? None of the Matrons appear armed or threatening, though they carry themselves with a grim and somber purpose.
As you discretely make your rounds, you come to a graveyard behind and to the left of the church. Pretending to take historical interest in the mossy headstones, you instead study the church with burglarous intent. There is an old and gnarled beech tree here, and one of its branches overhangs the church. You estimate that, unarmored, you could climb the tree and access the bell-tower from the church roof.

There is a bench in front of the rail yard where you can sit and work on your tan while also keeping an eye on the church. As your mind wanders, you idly study the scenery... the highest foothills are to the west of town, however the skyline is broken into so many peaks that you realize the futility of trying to locate the hidden cave without a guide or some sort of clue, perhaps to be gained from climbing the bell-tower at night, as the child suggested.
The afternoon drags on...

As the daylight hours dwindle and the sun drops to an acute angle with the horizon, something interesting finally happens... Breath of New Moon observes a bustle of activity at the Rectory building behind the Church. The Matrons are scurrying to and fro and seem almost excited (at least compared to their usually stoic demeanor).
The double-door opens and a Green Man waddles out... he is enormously fat, almost super-humanly corpulent. You can hear the wheezing and glubbering of his labored breathing from your bench all the way across the street. He is wearing a loose black robe (like a judge or gospel singer) and keeps brushing his greasy, sweaty hair from his forehead with his pudgy fingers. The Matrons swarm anxiously around him, perhaps to catch him if he stumbles.
The Pastor pauses to catch his breath a moment with his hand on the railing, then lurches up the half-dozen steps to the main entrance and into the Church. The very timbers of the building protest under his bulk, and then there is another pause, followed by more creaking as he ascends the stairs to the bell-tower.
The Great Church-Bell of the Mountain God tolls! For a full minute, its deep bass gong rings out repeatedly, an ominous asymmetrical rhythm fraught with hidden meaning. Then it ceases, its final stroke reverberating and echoing from the surrounding foothills.

Breath of New Moon affects an air of idle lounging as she studiously watches the unfurling events.
Her eyes dart sideways to the hills, to see if any immediate reply is evident to the tolling.

You do not hear any audible reply to the bell tolling.
Curiously, The Pastor has not yet descended from the bell tower.

(d6 = 6)
"Oi, what we got?" says a burly Green Teen with a buzz cut.
"She ain't from around here," replies his squeaky-voice friend.
"I wonder if it's true what they say about bone girls..." says a long-limbed third Townie, and makes an incredibly disrespectful comment about your heritage.
Buzz Cut picks up a pebble and throws it in your direction (missing). "Oi! Show us some skin, beautiful!" His friends crack up at the awful joke.
It appears your plan to be discreet and avoid attracting attention to yourself has failed...

"I've got half a mind to run you through right now and use your intestines to strangle the remaining breath from your throat, simply to teach the rest of you some manners." Breath of New Moon replies in an icily calm manner to the Buzz-cut Townie. "But to tell the truth, as I am simply waiting out the day for the next train out of here, I have not the inclination at the moment."

"But to tell the truth, as I am simply waiting out the day for the next train out of here, I have not the inclination at the moment." (d20 = 17) Buzz Cut is (foolishly!) not intimidated by your tough-talk. "You don't have the guts! We own this town, our fathers built the railroad. Lay a finger on us and you'll never get out of Aylesbury alive" He moves his hand to his waist, revealing a dagger hanging from his belt. "Let's say you empty your purse and nobody gets hurt, pay up your 'loitering tax' and we'll forget we ever saw you." Squeaky-Voice and Stretch don't look convinced, but they nevertheless stand side-by-side with the Alpha of their townie gang.

Breath of New Moon shrugs, "Have it your way, then." She stands up and readies her Glaive. If Buzz Cut moves in with his dagger, she'll give him a mighty wallop on the side of his head with the flat of her blade or shaft, relying on the longer reach of her weapon.

Walking up behind Squeaky Voice and Stretch as quietly as he can, The Shadow of the Evermore stops right behind them and barks, in his deepest and most fearsome voice, "These small children causing you trouble, Breath of New Moon?"
