I think I've figured out what fyd is and how it informed the # appearing from 0d&d monsters and treasure section and the # of men at arms for name level characters. It appears that the number of peasants, gold from taxation and men at arms in 0d&d all work with the rules presented in Arneson's First Fantasy Campaign. In fact the the cost for 1 HF soldier in 0d&d per year (36 gp) is the same as outfitting 1 HF soldier in FFC 1 fyd = 1 gp per month helmet = 2 gp sword = 10gp chain armor = 24 gp total: 36 gp+ 10 gp per year. 0d&d simplified and compiled all the math so that a player is simply told you get 3d6x10 men at arms and a HF costs 36 gp per year, whereas FFC took the fyd population (30% of peasant) and outfitted them accordingly. I describe it in the 1st link. I really think it's a fascinating "nuts and bolts" look at the stronghold rules in 0d&d. here's the link to my dragonsfoot article

I assumed it was a typo for fyrd (militia). Ditto. typo or abreviation. Cooper - really great to see someone besides me and snorri diging into the FFC!

...Or maybe it is an old spelling for Fid, the seaman's tool for undoing knots! (Bad linguist's humour, sorry.)
