Probably people already know this, but Joseph Bloch, author of the "Castle of the Mad Archmage" megadungeon, has been working on an AD&D retro-clone - of sorts - based on his idea of what the 2nd Edition of AD&D might have been like had it been written by Gary Gygax. The draft Players Manual and Dungeon Masters Toolkit are available to download, for free, here: www.adventuresdarkanddeep.com/I'm more of a Holmes/OD&D guy, but I downloaded the Players Manual and was very impressed by the new character classes - Bard, Jester, Mystic, Savant and Mountebank. The Bard and Jester are the best versions of these classes I have ever seen. It strikes me that the new classes are all oriented more towards "intelligent play" rather than "hack and slash" and would be more at home in a city than in a dungeon. It actually makes me want to play the game to see how they would work in practice - I'm thinking it would suit a high-magic setting with urban as well as dungeon adventures.
