Does anyone have any RL knowledge about the ranges of trebuchets and ballistas? My gut feeling is that the former would have an appreciably longer range than even the hvy catapult (24" - 48"). As for the latter, I'm clueless. Halp!

No experience with the range bit, but ballistas and trebuchets are types of catapult. So, you would probably classify trebuchets as heavy catapult and ballistas as light.

Wouldn't really call a ballista a type of catapult... Only thing I would say with the ballista is to not give it a minimum range. Was tempted to suggest basing it on the cannon rules, but looked at them again and they don't fit.
On reflection I would suggest the following: count each ballista as 8 immobile Heavy Crossbowmen that always count as firing at unarmoured targets. They also count as doing 1 point of structural damage in sieges.
Springalds would count as 4 immobile Heavy Crossbowmen that always count as firing at unarmoured targets. They do no damage to structures.
If I recall correctly the longest recorded modern trebuchet shot was about 2000 feet. Which is 66" in chainmail. However, this wasn't firing a rock. Thing is, trebuchets varied so much in power and range that it's not possible to give them a single accurate range for gaming purposes.
It doesn't define what heavy and light catapults are in Chainmail. So I would probably use Light Catapult for Mangonels and Onagers and the like, and Heavy Catapult for Trebuchet.

If you want to be really nasty, you could use light catapult range, but allow it to skewer 6" of figs like it does in EPT. Mwah, hah, hah, Hah!

Harr. That would be nasty. I just had it essentially automatically kill at least 3 targets at 24" range.
