I remember getting to this part of the rule book and my eyes glazed over and gave up on it-

I paid all of a dollar for this game and felt cheated. It's amazing that anyone would have gone to this much trouble to preserve it.

Well, P&P is on the complex and comprehinsive style of games and not my cup of tea rules wise... But I'd say that a list of AD&D abbreviations would rival if not exceed the list here. P&P seems to me to be well thought out and organized, at least.

The website is remarkable. Snider obviously cared a great deal for this game.

I remember once hearing about a reviewer who decided that P&P was actually a spoof on rpgs, though I can't imagine Avalon Hill doing something like that.

If you have the patience to read it, there's a treasure hidden beneath. We just started a campaign yesterday- mesmerizedbysirens.blogspot.it/2012/03/celebrating-death-of-ad.html

RPG totally unfit for long/deadly/gritty campaigns: great art, awful engine.
Character creation is fun the first two times, but then it's like having a naked minotaur behind you in the shower box.

I have never, and quite probably will never run a P&P game, let alone a campaign, so I'd love to hear what the issues you ran into were, if you'd care to share some reasons why you don't like it.

Poor Rick.
Even in the GAMA membership, "Powers and Perils" became known as "PeePee" almost instantly.

Just a matter of pure crunch, being P&P full of pointless overcomplexity: - too much time to explain the game
- too much time to write down a PC Sheet
- not linear skill/spell system (but a simple combat system)
- poorly organized text
- it's just another D&D Hack, with no particular winds of changes in it
In few words, you can always waste 4-5 hours of your life in a P&P game: it can be fun, but for longer campaigns you can find a lot of other games doing way better what P&P is supposed to do.

I hope you share more about your P&P game. Have an Exalt! I would love to hear more as well. I found this game fun because it is so different than most other systems I've played. I think the case numbering that AH employed may put most folks off, but if you think about it seeing stuff like this in the AD&D DMG was a little unnerving the first time too. P&P just needs to be given a chance. It's got a lot to recommend it.

I got some P&P stuff via ebay, spring chicken that I am.
It feels Tekumel-ish, but without the depth. Not as bad a game as some people want to make it, but certainly requiring more patience than your average RPG.
I will eventually run Snider's "Tower of the Dead" as a PBP, by the way, even though I think I'll change a lot when it comes to the frame narrative, and pre-dungeon events.

BUMP Hey guys, looks like I'll run an adaptation of "Tower of the Dead" this fall, for my "Mordred" setting. Did anybody among you actually run this one, ever? It's surely a rather convoluted, and long dungeon crawl, but I think it has a whole lot of potential. If you could give me any opinions and campaign reports, that would be awesome! Yours, Rafe
