Atmospheric and haunting interpretation of Chambers poem by Lindbergh baby.
Along the shore the cloud waves break, The twin suns sink beneath the lake, The shadows lengthen In Carcosa.
Strange is the night where black stars rise, And strange moons circle through the skies But stranger still is Lost Carcosa.
Songs that the Hyades shall sing, Where flap the tatters of the King, Must die unheard in Dim Carcosa.
Song of my soul, my voice is dead; Die thou, unsung, as tears unshed Shall dry and die in Lost Carcosa.

Do you use music when you play Carcosa, if so what? I prefer to use music for atmosphere and mood when I gm and for Carcosa I would choose themes from heroic fantasy movies and games (Conan the Barbarian! ), something exotic like Dead Can Dance or otherworldly ambient (Brian Eno, Tangerine Dream, Planete Sauvage). And lots of dark ambient (Lustmord, Abominations of Yondo) for rituals and encounters with Great Old Ones and other nasties.

I intro'd a game with this once:
It was a little more upbeat then I meant it to be, but it is a groovy song.

bert - yes, lots of psychedelia / space / kraut! Thanks for the link to A Scent Of Garmambrosia, great stuff! When it comes to Hawkwind I think my favorite song is this: Hassan I Sahba / Assassins of Islam: www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEmnqqFO1Gs

I have always found the sounds of Eric Dolphy to embody some of the Jazz influence of the Old Ones

Although, not the most appropriate music for a tabletop game - being loud speed metal - but the music of Bal-Sagoth have some awesome lyrics, inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard and (of all things) Jack Kirby. Here are some of my favorite lyrics from To Dethrone The Witch-queen Of Mytos K'unn: "O' grim gods of battle, empower us this night... Anoint us with the crimson rain, feed our steel with slaughter... Let every blow be a killing blow, grant us victory, or a warrior's death."and... "Wolves of the north, raise thine steel to the skies, revel in the pride of your wounds, Let our victory-song ride the winds of this blood-gorged eve, For on this night of red swords we have wrought a legend, Forged in the fires of our rage, and tempered with the spilled blood of the slain..."The lyrics would make for great script or NPC dialog in a game.

If you want something really evil, just play the latest release of whatever pop-music diva is being talked about around the 'net and on the news. That garbage they shovel out is straight from the pits of Hades.

A solid rotation of N'SYNC, 98 Degrees, and the Backstreet Boys in the background, while a projector displays the Toxic Avenger in the background on an infinite loop with a slow shutter strobe light. Edit: On a more serious note, Zeppelin 2 syncs up really well with the Road Warrior. Proof: goo.gl/gMNxsMute the Road Warrior.

I second about hawkwind. But about Carcosa, I could go to Ozric tentacles. or, for a more disturbing ambiance, Einsturzende Neubauten.

I always play Stereolab at the table; it sets a very wide-eyed science-fantasy tone, though - maybe not quite appropriate for Carcosa, which might benefit from the likes of Horatiu Radulescu, Eliane Radigue, or the young Alex Mincek.

Howbout the soundtrack for the original Quake by Nine Inch Nails? Or any of the various instrumental tracks by NIN (specifically from his Ghosts I-IV album, which I've used for many different Lovecraft or Horror inspired games).

I listen to music when creating background material for games but we don't listen to music at the gametable. For the mood you are describing Brian Eno and Tangerine Dream (early period) are excellent choices. It sounds like you should check out more Krautrock. The best introduction is Julian Cope's survey Krautrocksampler, an expensive book 2nd hand at the moment www.amazon.com/Krautrock-Sampler-Julian-Cope/dp/0952671913You can however check his list of recommendations here: rateyourmusic.com/list/muzex/a_krautrock_top_50___julian_cope

Cope himself (what a fascinating guy) might not be the worst choice: the underrated World Shut Your Mouth conveys a combination of grandeur and wryness that might fit the affect of some games. Could also bring in some Roxy Music to that end.
My knowledge of The Teardrop Explodes is pretty shallow - have to look into that in greater detail.

Whatever kind of music is associated with the aborigines of Australia, Native American drum chants (Mezzo-American) as well. Anything minimalistic and natural works.
