Hi, I downloaded your rules and likely missed something, but was wondering:
do players roll morale, too? How do you find the starting morale value for monsters? You mention it as part of the combat sequence, but I didn't notice it.
Also, your protection points system doesn't mention target point totals or how they correspond to party strength. You mention the possibility of a few characters going in with a ton of retainers, does this change the 5 point per encounter guideline. Is one 2HD monster sufficient? Am I misreading this?
Thanks in advance,
Scott

Basically, players of level 1-3 roll morale at the beginning of every combat. I reccomend you give them a +1 if they are actively adventuring. Heros and above only roll morale when facing a particularly difficult threat. Morale, essentially functions as an initiative and combat ferocity system in the game. D@D is a game of referree fiat. Monsters may be assumed to have normal morale or you may deem them to have been affected in some way or you may determine condition randomly with a d6. Also, your protection points system doesn't mention target point totals or how they correspond to party strength. What is a "target point total"? Anyway, its Arnesons system, not mine, but I did have to work out the mathmatics of HD per point and so forth as he never gave the details, only the results. Party Strength is not taken into account. The system is individualized in that a 2nd level character, adventuring in a group might have a reasonable chance of surviving a series of encounters stocked by protection points. Protection Points provide a guide for stocking but only a guide. Feel free change the totals as you deem appropriate. You mention the possibility of a few characters going in with a ton of retainers, does this change the 5 point per encounter guideline. Is one 2HD monster sufficient? Am I misreading this? Thanks in advance, Scott Sufficient for what? To TPK, no. To provide a challenge against "a ton" of retainers? no. To challenge a few 1st level few players, yes, depending on circumstance. Regarding the monster stats though it should be tied to the number of rooms you have. At first level, only 1 out of 6 will be occupied, on average. So in a six room structure you would have 30 PP (6*5) to distribute in one room. Thus that one room could have 12 2HD monsters lurking therein. Understand that "balance" is a foreign concept to Arsonian gaming. The levels aren't meant to be even challenges that "match" the party strength. They are meant to be naturalistic so that you could use the Protection Points to stock a level with one Balrog or a couple hundred orcs. A low level party with lots of retainers could probably wipe out the orcs, particularly if not faced all at once, but the Balrog would likely be another story.... The object is to get players to approach each situation with the question "how do we handle this" rather than "attack". Overall, more protection points means more challenge, but circumstance and party creativity is a bigger factor in success or failure than how well the monsters match the party.

That is a valuable and clear explanation!
