Any thoughts on the FFC cover? Why does it depict a Fire Elemental in a mountain pass?

Because it was some art JG had available? Early on, they definitely tried to be as cheap as possible with the art, with much of the art in the Wilderlands being stock clip art.

The copyright page (of the '77 edition at least) has "Fire Elemental on cover by Pixie Bledsaw Other illustrations by dave Arneson"
I think Bledsaw put it on the cover because he could, not because it had anything to do with Blackmoor per se. I vaguely remember reading some post or something that indicated the background pic was by or from somebody else, probably public domain.

I vaguely remember reading some post or something that indicated the background pic was by or from somebody else, probably public domain. Perhaps. But now that it is there, what could it mean? The one thing I can think of is that this is no Fire Elemental, but rather Zugzul, God of the Afridhi, descending from the mountain of Goblin Kush... Thoughts? Havard
