In the "SPELLS TABLE" for magic-users on page 21 of Men & Magic, the spells of each level are listed numerically from 1 to 14. What's the reason the spell were listed that way instead of alphabetically?

(I apologize this this has come up before, but it's proving difficult to google. Probably I'm missing something obvious.)

I assume it was to help one generate a random spell, but of course we don't have d14's so maybe that won't help much. As far as I know this topic has never been discussed on this board, however.
There are times (such as scrolls) when you need a random spell. I just use a d20 and re-roll anything higher than 14 when I want a random spell.

And I wouldn't take the lack of alphabetization as anything significant, either. They just put down what they had, and there was little editing on the booklets.
(And, really, with only 14 spells, you can still find what you want even if they aren't in alphabetical order. I would guess that was the thinking.)
