What do you all think about a fantasy campaign were psionics take the place of magic? In most areas the people would just assume that it was the exact same thing. I'm kicking around the idea of a Dark Ages world where psionic power runs in certain families, and members of these families tend to end up as powerful sorcerers, high priests, monarchs, cult leaders, etc. There would be no magic users or clerics as we know them in D&D, just certain exceptional people who have the potential to obtain vast influence because of their abilities.

I think it could be a great game.
I also think, solely from my perspective, that it wouldn't be D&D. But that's not the issue.
It would have its own atmosphere (and likely lots of it), and it wouldn't be just another run-of-the-mill campaign.
Let us know what happens with that, okay?

Indeed, doc; I'm interested in how this turns out as well (maybe my bad experiences/feelings regarding psionics will be redeemed... ).

Sort of like Star Wars and "the Force", eh? Nice twist.

I'm working on a fantasy conversion of Traveller, using their psionics as magic. But that's kind of different, because Traveller's psionics seems to be more fantasy than science-fiction to start with.

It'd be easy enough to have all three kinds of magic - psionics relying on a talent of the individual practicing it, magic-users relying on learned rituals, and clerics relying on invoking their deity.

Sounds rather like the Deryni books by Katherine Kurtz.

I ran a campaign once with the idea of post-nuclear wasteland stuff. It was basically Giant insects, minimals (mini-elephants, etc), no arcane magic, and all humans had psionics. Quite weird stuff - very hard to DM if I remember

Kinda like Marvel Universe Magic: Personal powers of the mind, body and spirit Universal powers involving manipulation of ambient magical energies Dimensional powers utilizing incantations and rituals to channel energy from extra-dimensional entities allied to your cause

Sounds rather like the Deryni books by Katherine Kurtz. Actually, doc, for reference purposes, I think there may have been a Deryni GURPS sourcebook...
