Gargoyles by Gaslight progresses. I am having the most trouble is in combat. I could take the easy way out and just use the original combat system, but it doesn't fit as well with the time period. There will be three sorts of combat: fists, knives and swords, and guns.
What if they were all done the same, but the outcomes were assumed to be different? Say we are in combat fighting in a bar. You hit me and do X damage. We understand that that damage isn't going to kill me and when I am at zero hit points I drop out of the fight until sometime later with all of my hitpoints returned.
If you have a knife the same thing happens but I make a saving throw the following turn to see how much damage I can shrug off. Regardless of the shrugging off I still take 1 extra point of damage each turn from bleeding untill the wound is attended to.
Lastly the gun does its damage the same as everything else but it fires faster and potentially does more damage. I still get the saving throw the following turn and can come back from the dead just like characters in movies but will need to get help quickly. Distance from the target would provide negative modifiers to the ability to hit. Character dexterity would modify the saving throw.
Does that seem too different from the feel of OD&D? Aside from the movement of the saving throw does that even feel different?
