Four copies of the original interviews have been made by hand. The 10 DVDs contain about 22 1/2 hours of interviews. I am still not sure what it will cost but I do know that doing it by hand is tedious and slow. There is also a 1 disk that is an advance teaser but at least it's edited. Still don't know what to charge.
No distribution yet and at 22+ hours there will probably not be much demand.

One option might be to use Lulu or a similar service. That way, you don't have to worry about how much demand there is and don't have to do the burning part. The section on DVD's on demand is here. Would something like that be feasible?

This might sound completely crazy, but have you considered approaching the History Channel with it? They might be interested as it's a part of history they haven't yet explored, and if they aired it as a miniseries, it would also then be released for purchase through them.
Just a thought.

I think that's a fantastic idea. The History Channel has gone downhill, imho, jumping on the reality show bandwagon. (Seriously, what do Ice Road Truckers and Ax Men have to do with history?) "Dragons in the Basement" is exactly the kind of quirky, offbeat cultural-history documentary the channel needs to help realign itself... If the History Channel doesn't go for it, what about the Sci-Fi Channel or G4?

With all the recent chatter, does anyone know if Dave's family would be able to continue with this project or if Dave has any interest in the work being passed on to someone else to finish?

We intend to move forward with all projects Dave was working on. It is going to take some time to go through the material for everything Dave was working on. If Dave had intentions for something to be made available, if at all possible our goal is to make it available.

I think I own a copy of pretty much everything Blackmoor ever created and I look forward to supporting any future products as well.

That is some ray of light in the mist of Daves passing at least if this is released others will know the major role he had to play in the development of the hobby as well as the others who did also!

That is excellent news. It's important to preserve the origins of the hobby for future generations.

I have to say, speaking as a fan, I'd like it if they rethought the decision to redo Blackmoor as 4e, and (if they can't go back to an even earlier edition) just redo it for Pathfinder.

Hm. I didn't realize it was a license. I was under the impression that Dave had the rights to his setting; the name would be difficult for WotC to claim ownership of as it's been used in as diverse properties as the Nancy Drew novels...

Unfortunately, they have this Trademark which would at least block it's use in the name of an RPG book without license (might not block use on the maps and such). Frank

Ah crud, well, go to www.uspto.gov/. From the menu at the left, select Trademarks, 3 - seach TESS. Put "blackmoor" in the search. Two entries will show up. One was originated by TSR and is now held by WOTC - for "PRINTED INSTRUCTION BOOKLETS FOR THE PLAYING OF ADVENTURE GAMES." Frank Frank

After checking out that link, a thought occurs to me ...
One of the dungeon levels of Blackmoor is an 18 hole golf course. Or, perhaps some enterprising Lord or Lady drains part of the swamps for a golf course.
Or putt-putt! Where the hazards are REAL!!!

Hm. I didn't realize it was a license. I was under the impression that Dave had the rights to his setting; the name would be difficult for WotC to claim ownership of as it's been used in as diverse properties as the Nancy Drew novels... I might be wrong about this, but here is how I think it works: Dave (or Dave's family) owns the lisence to the contents of the FCC, which really is the essence of Blackmoor. However WotC owns the rights to the name Blackmoor as an RPG setting as well as the contents of the modules published by TSR. From what I understand, Dave got a pretty good deal with WotC because they wanted both him and Gary out of the way with regards to the rights to D&D. This deal is what allowed Dave to keep his Blackmoor lisence when Dragonlance and Ravenloft were being pulled back into the fold. This is speculation, but I think that had he wanted to, Dave might have published what would basically be Blackmoor products, using the maps, characters etc etc, but not the name Blackmoor without the lisence from WotC. However, the name as well as the association with D&D probably made it seem more attractive to obtain this lisence from WotC even though that came with the requirement of using current editions of D&D (It is possible that they may have been able to stay with 3E). Im piecing this together by clues left by Dave, Dustin etc and I may be totally wrong about all of this though. Havard

Dave did have the PDF of Supplement II: Blackmoor on his website for years, and WOTC never did anything about it -- I was under the impression he was permitted to distribute it.

Or WotC just didn't see it as problematic. Supplement II didn't really step on their toes in any way.
