I was wondering if anyone has used the monster to-hit table for players too and if that has caused any problems. To me it seems like it would be easier to just use one table for both.

Interesting that you would bring this up, because I've been thinking about something kind of like this. (There is an old thread on Fighting Capability that goes into this topic somewhat.)
For most classes, the Hit Dice number and the FC seem to match. For clerics it's not so close. If I was to design OD&D from scratch I'd be tempted to make HD and FC one and the same, in which case a single unified combat table would emerge.

I combined attack matrices I and II into a single table here: Very nicely done indeed! And for the busy ref who prefers fewer tables, here is a combined view of the same information... I also created a "smoothed" progression matrix in that same thread. But in my games, I tend not to use the attack matrices at all. I simply add PC level (or 1/2 level, rounded down, for magic-users and any other "non-proficient" type attacks) and monster HD to the d20 roll. For me, not having to refer to the monster attack matrix during play greatly speeds play.
