Splitting up the group only happens in horror movies, right? Right?

Chapter 2: In Search of the City-State of the Invincible Overlord #4
On Proteus 6's watch, he hears movement in the woods. He sees a man in rustic clothing and calls out to him. The man says his name is Thorax; he is a druid. Proteus identifies himself as the leader of the party and asks Thorax if he would like to come with them to the City-State. The druid stated that although he prefers nature to urban settings, he feels a kinship with the bard and decides to accept. When the rest of the party awakens, Proteus introduces Thorax.
The coachmen drive down the road to one of the gates of the City-Stare. With a 10 silver piece toll, the party is inside the City-State of the Invincible Overlord! They overhear the coachmen speaking with the manager of Sprocket Coach Line, hearing that passengers who commandeered another coach had a glabrezu summoned to punish them. They then saw two men being dragged away in chains. The manager said those men tried to get away from the coach without paying.
They find themselves very near the imposing Cryptic Citadel and Silverlight Palace, but a military parade forces them off Twilight Street. Deciding to head down By-Water Street, Tig and Delva ask Silas where a jeweler would be. Silas explains that the process of finding the right buyer involves making contacts and subtlety. He said he would be able to find some leads within a day or two. With that, Silas and his bodyguard head off on their own, leaving Tig and Delva and Beth to ponder their situation.
Seeing a Chain-mail shop, they decide to head in. Delva buys Beth a suit of chain mail - he had thought all this time that she couldn't wear anything heavier than leather. He then gave Ariadne the suit of leather. Ariadne decided to buy herself a suit of chainmail as well, and sold the leather armor to the armorer. Deciding that the gold for the leather was his, Delva took the money from the sale from the woman. Insulted, Ariadne stormed out of the shop.
Proteus (accompanied by Trixie) and Thorax also went down By-Water Street, but turned down an alley. They proceeded to wind their way through a maze of alleys before coming back out to another street. Looking for hallucinogens, they were getting frustrated to find little to meet their ends. Stopping in a cook's shop, they try the fried goose. Paying handsomely, Proteus is told he can come by for a whole year for the goose meat. They leave the shop with a dozen goose packages stuffed in their sacks. They enter a tavern, order some drinks, and buy from the bartender some "quality stuff" from Swamp Mermist. Their goal achieved, they head back into the streets, looking for trouble.
Looking for a place to stay for their time in the city, Tig and Delva decide to enter the Blue Dolphin Inn. Paying for rooms for the night, they take the bartender up on his offer of trying the snake cooked in bear fat. They decided it tasted like chicken. Good chicken, but chicken nonetheless. After sampling some of the wolf stew, they went to their rooms to leave behind some of their bulkier items.
Proteus and Thorax made their way to Murky Street, where they saw a stable on the corner. Thorax convinced the stabler to let him speak to one of the horses. After much ridicule on the part of the stableworkers and a payment of some gold, the druid was allowed his audience. After speaking with the animal, Thorax was left with little concrete information about the city, but asked the horse if it would help him if he ever needed it. The horse said if he fed him good oats and gave him water and let him run in the fields, he would. Having enough of this horseplay, the stabler kicked him out when Thorax tried to give the horse an extra serving of oats.
Heading into a bakery, the pair convinced the baker to bake a large pastry with some of the vegetation they bought earlier. They also sampled some of the pastries the baker had already made. Deciding it would be a fine idea to split up, Proteus and Trixie headed north to the Slave Market Plaza while Thorax wanded about in the alleys off of Murky Street. Thorax walked by a tavern, saw some dead ends, and found his way back to Murky Street while waiting the two hours for the baker to finish their custom order.
Proteus spoke to the slave foreman, who told him that the next slave auction would be within the hour. The bard asked if there were any elves in the auction. The foreman surmised that anything is possible. Suddenly, Proteus felt a stab from behind. He turned to find an attractive woman dressed as a mermaid darting at him with a vicious sword. Frightened, Trixie ran off. Proteus asked the woman if she would like to follow him. The blond houri never spoke, replying only by plunging her rapier into his chest hilt-deep and kicking his body away to yank it back out. With his life essence rapidly leaving him, he saw the woman snatch the money purse from his person and finishing her summary pat down of the rest of his body, left him to bleed out in the street.
