I'm betting this has come up before, but I noticed nothing on the first page of this forum.
What characters from fiction stand out as truly "archetypal" -- whether or not one might think they need special classes in D&D? And how might one lump the characters into types? Here's my start (in no particular order):
King Arthur, Roland, and their peers: knights Most heroes in classical mythology probably = knights as well, perhaps Tarzan, Mowgli: beast-lord savages Robin Hood: bandit, marksman, ranger, scout Cugel the Clever: picaro Three Musketeers, John Carter, Grey Mouser: fencers Kull, Conan, Fafhrd, etc.: barbarian warriors Berserker types from the Sagas and so on I see as something else Elric of Melnibone, Nifft the Lean: combination warrior-magicians Assorted characters: steppe or desert nomads (barbarian variation?)
