I was just making some pre-gen characters using the rule book from the Challenger box set (big red dragon on the front).
Anyway I noticed that it says dwarves cannot use large weapons such as two handed swords and long bows. This would seem to exclude battle axes as well since they are listed as being large weapons. It seems to me that a dwarf without a battle axe is just plain wrong. I've kind of decided to just let my dwarves use battle axes but I thought I would see what other people thought on this point.

Let the Dwarves use battle axes. A battle axe is pretty much any axe meant for fighting that is larger then a hatchet.

This is an example of what happens when you have someone editing a work and striving for "balance". Dwarves should be able to use a battle axe -- there should be a specific exception there. But it doesn't always happen.
It's a dead cert that both Gary and Dave would have allowed a dwarf to use a battle axe!
This is where you need to make the game your own. Just because something is written in the book doesn't make it right. (Plus, it leads to rules lawyers!)

That's what I thought.
