...but I have not vanished. I have been in a bad way lately due to work (I've come to the conclusion that I hate my job, I despise my boss, and I'm completely trapped with both), which has led to some severe depression and feelings of being trapped in my life.
Not sure what I'm going to do about it--looking desperately for a means to change my situation but none seem to be presenting themselves.
Anyway, not to dump on everyone here, just wanted to pop in, say hey, and fill everyone in on the off chance anybody wondered where I'd disappeared to.

Not sure what I'm going to do about it--looking desperately for a means to change my situation but none seem to be presenting themselves. The job search can be tough, but keep trying. Hit up craigslist and be sure to read the paper (just in case, especially if you're a nurse!). Find a new one and then put in your notice where you are now. Many people go until they can't stand it and quit, then get screwed by lack of income when they can't find a new job (although there's always some job out there; McDonalds, for example, will hire absolutely anyone). For my part, I'm frustrated as hell with my life right now. My wife, through no fault of her own, fell on some d**ned slick ice and broke her leg. Having spent all last week jumping around between the doctor, the surgery center, etc., getting caught back up in class while keeping things in order at home is proving to kick my ass. What do I do? I bury my head in the sand and frequent these forums! That, and I read. I'm a bit depressed. Anyways, hopefully my awful story has cheered you up.

Sounds like you guys are having real problems. My sympathies.
Makes me realize how good I have it. I wish all my online friends had it as good as I do.

The job search can be tough, but keep trying. Hit up craigslist and be sure to read the paper (just in case, especially if you're a nurse!). Problem is, I currently work for the university where I am in grad school. Need to find another job at the same university ot keep my tuition benefits intact. Yeah, I've never made that mistake and never plan to. Ugh, that sucks, dude. Sorry to hear that. My wife is the one bright spot in my life. She puts up with my crap and never complains about it--what else could a guy ask for?

Ah, how fortunate I am! (I didn't realize you were a GA.)
I am a grad student and I love my job. (I teach Calculus I.) My boss is fantastic and I have zero complaints about anything work-related, except perhaps some lazy students.

Oh, I'm not a GA. I'm an underpaid administrative assistant and grant administrator for the dept. chair and vice chair of a department (bioengineering) that is not the school in which I'm taking classes (MLIS).
I'm just a master's student, not a PhD student.

Well gosh then, it sounds like you could apply for a position in your own department. Use that for the excuse rather than that you hate your current job (and boss).
Speaking of underpaid, I get $10,700 per year (well, per nine months), though I only have to work half time. Even double that isn't all too impressive. Consider also that I pay more than seven times the rent I payed as an undergraduate. It sucks.

Remember, the best thesis or dissertation is a DONE thesis or dissertation. It's a mantra.
That having been said, Random's right - look for another job at the University. There are often more than you think, even now, and people understand the "I have to get out of my current position" since it happens to them, too.
