I'm starting to think about launching the One Page Dungeon Contest 2010 and I'd love to see some of the best submissions to be published in Fight On! #9 and #10. What do you think? If we mention our plans up front, we should be fine (submissions require Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike 3.0, which grants more rights than Fight On! asks for).

We were one of many sponsors of the big one page dungeon contest last year and would love to do it again. Let us know the details! We can also donate prizes again this year.
We would also absolutely love to guarantee publication to top submissions, questions are only how many and what categories. (In fact, if people submitted stuff last year they'd like us to see, send it along in the meantime!)
One worry: does CCIII require me to put stupid license text in the magazine?
This sounds great - let's talk more when my cold goes away, prob. tomorrow...

As for the number of winners, last time we went for three entries per judge, one of them being prize winning. With five judges we'd be looking at 15 entries on the winner list and 5 prize winners. As for the CC BY SA 3.0 license itself, all you're required to do is include the following URL: creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ – the rest is obvious stuff like not removing the title, the author, any URLs the author wanted to put on the submission, etc. Get well soon!

The other option is to just get permission from the winner(s) as you do from any other author. Authors can always grant different permissions to different venues.
The advantage of CC BY SA (and other such licenses) is that you can use the adventure without permission, as long as you follow the rules of the license.

Very interesting posts Kensanata, great reading -- thanks for posting the links. With all the one page dungeon tips and analysis around the web, it seems pretty likely that the standard will be very high this year I'm not sure whether you are suggesting submitting part of your blog, or some of last year's entires, or both. Either way, I think it would make for great reading. I imagine it should be relatively straight forward to contact most of the dungeon authors

Thanks, waysoftheearth. My suggestion was that Calithena might say "Ok, let's put three 1PDC 2009 entries into the next issue of Fight On! What do you suggest?" Then I'd say, "Ok, let me try and contact these ten guys here and I'll come back with a suggestion." The links were there for other people to read so that they, too, could suggest some 1PDC 2009 entries for publication in Fight On! And if they volunteered to contact the authors, even better, hehe. I don't think my blog posts ought to be published in Fight On! What I could do, I guess, is to summarize my thoughts on the properties of a good One Page Dungeon. Kudos if I use the three entries Calithena has picked as examples to illustrate my point.

Consider my dungeon offered up for sacrifice.
If you think it would be worthy reading I could (possibly?) put together a few thoughts on the hows and whys of my 2009 entry to go with it. It would be a privilege to fly the "old school" flag for a moment in time, even if only to preach to the converted ;D
Fight On rocks.

Thanks guys!
I am still sick but trying to work today anyway.
I do want to contact the authors. It's the same as with games: as far as I know it's completely legal to write magazine articles for just about any game, but I still don't like to do it unless I've talked to the people who own the game and they're down with it.
I probably couldn't get more than 1 or 2 into issue 8 at this point but you never know. Please do contact authors, kensanata, and let them know we'd be interested. (Or if they're reading like waysoftheearth they can just send them along!)
Anyway, thanks....I have to contact artists now....

Well, my dungeon was voted "Best Pub" last year (as if I haven't been blowing that particular trumpet enough – see link below), and Alex/kensanata suggested I pipe up here...
So yes, if 'Arendt's Old Peculiar' would be of any use to you, feel free to take it. If the layout needs adjusting, let me know (I'm a layout monkey by trade, so it won't take long... actually, I might want to add my name on it somewhere).

Noburo, thanks! We will try to publish this in issue 8 or 9.
Waysoftheearth, can I get a link to your entry?
Alex, at least half of your favorites would be awesome if the authors are willing, but I guess I'll start with folks like waysoftheearth and noburo who show up here first and then move on to others when I have more time!

My entry "The Singing Cave" is listed in those posts. You have my full approval to publish that in an issue of FO! if you wished to. No problem.

You're welcome to use mine. (Cry of the Gravegod) It was the winner under the New School category, but don't let that throw you off. I think it ended up in that category because the Night Hag has class levels (which we were already doing back in '86!) and I used the term "sorcerer." Maybe it was just the linear structure, though.
By the way, Arendt's Old Peculiar was my personal favorite. I think a lot of people would get a kick out of that one.

You should blow as you see fit; I just took a look at it, and I thought it was brilliant. If I were running any sort of dungeony-type game, I'd use this in a shot.

Waysoftheearth, can I get a link to your entry? I don't know which entry corresponds to Waysoftheearth – they are organized by author real name and dungeon title.

the Night Hag has class levels (which we were already doing back in '86!) Paul Jaquays' "Borshak's Lair" has a good claim to being the fourth dungeon ever published, I think, and it has an orc magic-user (third level, but able to cast the scroll of limited wish he's carrying around!) I really dug Cry of the Gravegod, but then I am known to be tainted by the new-school

I suppose having him be a MU fits within the witchdoctor/shaman rules, but I'm guessing he would have done it anyway. I'm surprised it wasn't more common, actually.

I'm a bit of a Jaquays fanboy. I continue to chuckle whenever I think of this quote from the Fighting Fantasist blog: "recipient of the communal Old School Renaissance Man-Crush, Mr. Paul Jaquays himself..." And what a beautiful, if unrequited, bromance it is! (Yes, to stay on topic, Borshak's Lair is in the Dungeoneer Compendium).

noburo, I just checked out your entry for this year: awesome! Looks like tons of fun, and a beautiful presentation, as always. Now I'm going to have to dig out my Smithsonian Treasury of Newpaper Comics and re-read some of that old Caniff stuff. (those who haven't seen it, go to campaignwiki.org/wiki/DungeonMaps/One_Page_Dungeon_Contest_2010 and check out "Den of Villainy") You've got my vote.

Aw, cripes! Thanks!
Coming from such a virtuoso of the weird (and a fellow Jaquays fanboy, I see), that's no faint praise. I'll have a proper look at the other available entries tomorrow, but your trolls already had me grinning like a big idiot... Brilliant stuff!
