This might get a little technical.
Usually when someone submits a manuscript to a magazine and they accept it, the magazine is getting something like First North American Serial Rights to the piece.
Is this more-or-less what Fight On! is getting?
To be a bit more clear about what I'm really asking about: if I get something published in Fight On! and decide a year later to publish it on my website, is that going to be okay with everyone involved?
I don't really have any desire to get a bunch of contracts involved or anything -- I'm just trying to clarify the limits of our Gentlemen's Agreement, such as it is.
Cheers, Roger

You get more than that. Our rights arrangements are super-duper-liberal.
Authors keep ownership and ALL rights except Fight On!'s right to print the article in the form it is originally printed in the issue it is originally printed in in perpetuity. (I guess this technically includes occasional special offer issue collections, which reproduce multiple issues in their original form under one cover.)
Basically what we want is the ability to publish and keep publishing our issues as we put them together without hassle. The rest, is your business. We don't demand firsts or exclusives, etc., though we are certainly always happy to get them at your option.

Cal, what about re-printing "best of" books, such as the hardback version of issues 1-4 bundled together? Is that assumed to be "Fight On!'s right to print the article in the form it is originally printed in the issue it is originally printed in in perpetuity"?
I was guessing so, but thought I'd at least bring it out there.

We can't do a 'best of' book that's a selection of articles without getting permission from everyone involved anew.
The 'collected issues' volumes are a little bit of a grey area but since the issues are reprinted in them exactly as they originally were I guess I think of that as 'covered' by the definition. These only were available for about 1 week of our publishing history though. If it's not covered by the definition, I guess we should be considered as officially asking also for the right to occasionally reproduce the issues bound together (as they originally were published, etc.) in special limited edition hardbacks when we need to win a contest on lulu or otherwise do something special to promote the magazine and old school gaming.

I think you should do such a hard cover compilation every 5 issues. Mine is lonely and wants a companion.
Heck, that compilation offer is what got me to check out Fight On! in the first place!

I second the idea of another hardcover. The first one was issues 1 through 4. I'd love a hardcover of 5 through 8 to go with it.

You guys are just doing this to tick off those of us who have bought every single issue, aren't you?

Yeah, I've got them all too. I'm just being selfish because if there there is a hardcover of issues 5 through 8, I'll have a painting on the front AND back cover. And it just doesn't get much better than that.

Is the first hardcover still available? If not, will you make it available if you do a 5 to 8?

We might do some new hardcovers if there is another lulu author contest we can win or similar special occasion. Getting out the issues is our primary concern though. I imagine that if we did another round of hardcovers after issue 8 (say) there would be a 1-4 volume, a 5-8 volume, and maybe even a 1-8 mega-compendium. But these are special event only items...I think...and (to address coffee's point) they are not priced so as to be cheaper than the regular issues (that is, a hardcover of 5-8 would cost $40 at least).

For the record I have also bought every issue since the last compendium, in print, and I would still like a hard cover compendium.

Thanks Melan. This is a fanzine, we don't do contracts or anything like that. If you have something you'd like us to print, send it along!
